General Information Form

Essays

Applicants are asked to compose responses to five essays about their leadership experience and hopes for participating as a Youth Leadership Council Member. We recommend that you compose these essays in a word processor (Word, Word Perfect, etc…) and copy and paste them into the form. Save a copy of your word document for your records.

Essay Questions:

  • What is your greatest strength? Describe an instance in your life when this strength was particularly helpful.
  • What is the most meaningful element of leadership that you have learned as a young leader?
  • What is your experience with Roots & Shoots? When did you join? What is one of your most meaningful project experiences? Or if you haven’t been a member before, what is your experience with community service or service learning?
  • Why are you interested in participating in the Youth Leadership Council? What would you like to accomplish through your participation?

Creative Piece

Include with your application a creative piece that highlights your work with the Roots & Shoots program or something that is unique about you that can be used to provide a better sense of who you are. Possible submissions include: project videos, photo/visual scrap books, essays saying something unique about yourself or online creations (such as an online photo album or web site). Please contact your regional staff (see list below) or the Roots & Shoots National Office via email (youthfellow@janegoodall.org) with any questions or concerns you may have about your multi-media submission.

Letter of Recommendation

Applicants should submit one letter of recommendation from your Roots & Shoots group leader teacher, professor or mentor. This individual should be a non-family member, preferably someone who is familiar with your work with the Roots & Shoots program.

If you choose, this can be the same person who writes your letter of recommendation, your Roots & Shoots Group Leader or another interested adult.

Once complete, Applicants should make two (2) copies of application. The applicant should keep one copy, and then send via postal mail to their regional staff (a scanned pdf of the application can also be sent via email to regional staff).
