Get Involved

Roots & Shoots needs high-energy, goal-oriented Roots & Shoots youth members from around the United States who are looking for a deeper commitment to the Roots & Shoots network. As a member of a Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Council, the Youth Leader is responsible for engaging other youth in regional events, programs and youth campaigns. The Youth Leader also supports regional Roots & Shoots groups and reaches out to establish new groups in their region. This position fosters connections, friendship and action among our members.


Roots & Shoots Youth Leaders are required to:

  • Commit to a Council for two (2) years.
  • Spend a minimum of 10 hours per month on Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Council activities.
  • Work with the Youth Leadership support staff to define personal measurable goals as a Youth Leader.
  • Attend monthly Council meetings in person or by telephone conference.
  • Participate as a speaker, facilitator or table representative at presentations, group orientations, events or conferences in your local area.
  • Participate in regional outreach, events, conferences, campaigns and summits including:
    • Regional Youth Summit
    • Regional Campaign
    • Presentations to the general public, schools and partners
  • Participate in national events, campaigns and summits including:
  • Volunteer time to Dr. Jane Goodall's lecture tour when she comes to your region.
  • Recruit and support local youth for Roots & Shoots Youth Corps (if applicable in your region).
  • Receive and respond to council emails a minimum of twice a week.
  • Support Roots & Shoots fundraising efforts.
  • Respond to outreach or support request from Roots & Shoots Staff or Fellows as needed.

Youth Leaders set personal measurable goals in these areas:

Member Support

  • Visit local Roots & Shoots groups in your region and participate in their projects.
  • Contact members, offer support and urge them to submit their Project Reports through the Online Project Database.
  • Notify the regional office of newsworthy Roots & Shoots projects or stories in your area.

Peer Support

  • Identify local youth as candidates for the Youth Leadership Council and the Roots & Shoots Youth Corps (where applicable).
  • Help recruit, train and support other youth leaders and Youth Corps members (where applicable) by participating in presentations, group orientations, events and conferences.

Networking Support

  • Participate in networking events annually within your region-the purpose of these events is to develop productive relationships among groups and members.
  • Act as a representative for Roots & Shoots at state, regional and national events-including staffing information tables and/or giving presentations as necessary.
  • Collect email addresses for the Roots & Shoots eNewsletter distribution list.

Youth Campaigns Support

  • Promote participation in regional and national youth campaigns.
  • Create and implement service projects related to youth campaigns.
