Jane Goodall’s Town Hall Meeting: A Conversation on Peace

On September 18, 2011, Dr. Goodall will host Jane Goodall’s Town Hall Meeting: A Conversation on Peace at American University (AU) in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Goodall, a United Nations Messenger of Peace, and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, will preside over this one-of-a-kind event celebrating the 30th anniversary of the UN International Day of Peace resolution and the annual Roots & Shoots Day of Peace.
Join Dr. Goodall for a lively conversation, with audience involvement, on the meaning of peace within ourselves, peace within our communities, and peace around the world. Dr. Goodall will also share information about her international youth program, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, and how every individual makes a difference in the world. In these complex times, it has never been more important to reflect on the meaning of peace for people, animals, and the environment we all share.

Roots & Shoots Celebrates Day of Peace at the Oakland Zoo
In 2011, for the first time, Roots & Shoots California is celebrating our 9th annual Day of Peace in Northern California. Join us at the Oakland Zoo to see the work of Roots & Shoots youth, participate in service and unite to fly Giant Peace Doves in the Peace Dove Parade. Come participate in the festivities as attendants take part in a service project helping the Oakland Zoo chimpanzees, learn about local causes and earn stamps in a Passports to Peace activity. Enjoy a day of fun at the zoo celebrating peace as we make peace doves out of recycled materials to fly in the parade later that day!

Roots & Shoots Celebrates Day of Peace at Rainbow Beach
Along with the Rainbow Beach Advisory Council, Ray of Hope Center of the Arts, and the Chicago Build the Peace Committee the Jane Goodall Institute-Illinois will host Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots Day of Peace event at Rainbow Beach. The celebration will begin with a keynote speaker and world World Flag Ceremony where participants will send wishes of peace to the 193 countries of the United Nations. The day will also include interactive workshops that will highlight care and respect for people, animals and the environment. The celebration will conclude with a Peace Walk beginning at the Rainbow Beach Boat House and proceeding along the Lake Shore Street path back to Rainbow Beach.

Chicago Day of Peace Celebration at Dayley Plaza
This is the 33rd annual celebration of Peace Day in Chicago. Event features One Minute of Silence for World Peace and will have musical performances as well as speakers, including the Commissioner of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, Chicago Public Schools CEO 's representative, Dean of the Consular Corps and others. Giant Peace Dove Puppets will grace the Plaza carried by local Roots & Shoots organizations. The highlight of the event is the World Peace Flag Ceremony. Flags of all 193 nations as recognized by the UN are respectfully presented on stage as everyone joins the Call to Peace for each country. Flags are carried by students, Consuls, members of community and ethnic organizations, and other volunteers. Live world music accompanies this moving ceremony.

Roots & Shoots Celebrates 1st Annual Day of Peace in Louisville Waterfront Park
With community partners from around the state, Roots & Shoots members are celebrating this year for the first time at Louisville's Waterfront Park. Activities will include a Giant Peace Dove Parade, kids crafts and interactive activities, musicians and entertainment, presentations and displays from many local organizations who support humanitarian and environmental efforts food and goods vendors who work with fair trade and sustainable products.

Rail Yard Stewards Roots & Shoots Day of Peace –Harvest for Peace
Celebrating the annual Roots & Shoots Day of Peace in collaboration with the Rail Yard Stewards. The event will focus on the fall harvest and native plant species. Participants will learn about the importance of water conservation, planting native and edible plants and how the plants in the ground become food on the table. The celebration will include performances for and by young members, a service project and conversations about creating harmony for people, plants and animals in the high desert.
The event will conclude with a Giant Peace Dove Puppet Parade.

Dr. Goodall Attends United NationsInternational Day of Peace Student Observance
Dr. Goodall will join UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, other UN Messengers of Peace and Roots & Shoots members at the UN headquarters in New York City to commemorate the annual UN International Day of Peace. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the UN International Day of Peace resolution.
