Identify and Choose a Local Endangered Species

Identifying a local endangered species can be easy. Consider your geographical region, and the ecosystems around you to help you narrow your search, and then use some of the easy web tools below.

  • The IUCN Red List is a large database of information about endangered and threatened species. You can search for endangered species in your local area by going to "other search options".
  • www.earthsendangered.com is another site where you can search for endangered species in your local area as well as by type (mammal, fish, etc.).
  • Go to your state Fish & Wildlife Service site or the U.S.Fish & Wildlife Service site to find lists of state/nationally recognized endangered species.

Research and Create a Fact Sheet for Your Species

Research is key when studying your species. It is important to always double check your facts and remember to write down the sources that you used.

  • Research the ecology and conservation status of your species.
