René J.

René is a high school senior in Greenwich, Connecticut and this is her fourth term on the NYLC. Passionate about sustainability and social justice, René organizes numerous community-wide projects each year varying from food drives to hand-making cards for the elderly. René is the President of her highschool Roots & Shoots Club and a 2016 HerLead Fellow, chosen as one of fifty young women from over 4,500 applications to participate in a leadership forum. René has been awarded grants of $2,000 to $3,000 and is currently using these funds to build a community garden to increase access to fresh produce for members of her community. When René is not doing service work you can find her studying to become an environmental scientist or training as she is a black belt in taekwondo. René is also a member of the Abilis Youth Board, has received her town’s community service award twice, and received the President of The United States’ Service Award.
