"Rolling on the Tundra: A Polar Bear Adventure" Webcast: Nov. 4-6
"Rolling on the Tundra: A Polar Bear Adventure" is an interdisciplinary study of polar bears and climate change. Learn about polar bears, why they're endangered and how to help them through live webcasts at 11 a.m. CST on November 4, 5 and 6.
Near the Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada—not far from the town of Churchill, the "Polar Bear Capital of the World"—members of Polar Bears International, scientists, zoologists, educators and students gather at different times each winter to observe and study polar bears in the wild. During the first week of November, Julene Reed, long-time Roots & Shoots group leader from Collierville, Tennessee, will be joining Robert Buchanan (President of Polar Bears International) and scientists to take a journey on the Arctic tundra as they study the polar bears of the Hudson Bay area.
Julene and scientists will be conducting live webcasts from the tundra near Churchill for three consecutive days. This is a great opportunity to learn about polar bears from the experts as they are observing them. Teachers could schedule class time to watch the webcast together.
Programming will be as follows:
- Tuesday, November 4 - "All About Polar Bears"
This webcast will focus on background information regarding polar bears: their habitat, migration patterns, feeding habits, unique characteristics, behaviors, etc. - Wednesday, November 5 - "The Issues Surrounding Polar Bears"
This webcast will focus on environmental issues that are affecting the polar bears and their habitat. What impact are those issues having on the bears, what changes have scientists observed and how is their habitat changing because of climate change? - Thursday, November 6 - "Taking Action and Making a Difference"
This webcast will focus on actions that can be taken to help preserve the polar bear populations and protect their habitat. What can we do locally where we live? What kinds of activities and projects could we do to raise awareness in the larger, global community that could motivate people to make changes to conserve energy, reduce carbon footprints, etc.?
