ROOTS & SHOOTS BOOK CLUB: An Environmental Guide from A to Z by Tim Magner
03/19/2009

An Environmental GuidePeople, animals and the environment¿as a Roots & Shoots member you already know that everything is connected! Read An Environmental Guide from A to Z by Tim Magner to take that knowledge one step further.

Starting from A is for Amazon Rainforests and ending with Z is for Zoo, this book is brimming with enough information to interest any young environmentalist. Through beautiful illustrations by Aubri Vincent-Barwood and an easy to understand writing style, you see how people, places and animals are connected in nature. After learning about each topic, you will find a set of questions that encourage you to get outside and try finding some answers for yourself.

The letter K features Tanzania's own Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. This book shows what makes Mount Kili so important to African people and wildlife. You are then asked to answer questions about the highest hill that you have climbed and to explore what makes mountains in your region so important!

If you are inspired by An Environmental Guide from A to Z, take the following ideas back to share with your R&S group.

  • Create your own Abecedary
An Environmental Guide from A to Z
is an abecedary, or a book that highlights one word for each letter of the alphabet. Get together with your Roots & Shoots group and use plants, animals, people and places that are important in your community to create your own abecedary. Then share your book by reading it at your local library.
  • Become a Backyard Scientist
A lot of the questions featured in this book encourage you to go outside and observe nature-just like scientists do! Have your next Roots & Shoots meeting outside. Take the first few minutes to observe your surroundings, from the largest trees to the smallest insects. Write or draw your observations and share them with the group.
  • Relate It to Roots & Shoots
Just like this book, the Roots & Shoots model is based on building knowledge before you can take action. Use the Roots & Shoots community survey in the Resource Center to build knowledge about your community. You can use the answers to the survey to plan your next project!
