Healthy Eating Community Gardening Project & Let’s Move Initiative

  • Location
    Bronx & Manhattan, New York
  • Status
    Active

The Problem

Our wish for the project is to promote healthy eating and gardening as a physical activity (Let’s Move Initiative) in low-income neighborhoods in Manhattan and the Bronx, NY. We strive to provide a social vehicle that offers younger and older generations the opportunity to interact and engage in issues concerning their overall health and wellness, such as the importance of incorporating fresh fruits/vegetables/herbs into daily diets and we promote gardening, as a physical activity. We also wish that Intergenerational projects such as ours spread through low-income communities.

Our Plan

The project will give seniors and youth the opportunity to work together to plant flowers and harvest fruits/vegetables/herbs in their communities. We will partner with an existing community garden that will donate raised beds for us to garden during the Spring and Summer. We have Girl Scouts ( ages 4 - 14) and seniors (ages 65 & up) from the community-at-large that will work together to tend the garden (physical activity) and once crops are ready to harvest, the yield will be distributed amongst project participants and the community-at-large. We will also have a chef/nutritionist who will have cooking demos to show us how to prepare healthy meals from what we grew.
