The Problem

Our vision for this project is to beautify the open space area behind our local elementary school. This area is heavily used by the community as a nature trail as well as a hiking, running, and biking path. The campaign that was chosen was to purchase heavy duty trash cans to place along the trail as well as install a Pet Waste Station. Students participating in the project will be maintaining the Station and creating signs in both Spanish and English to educate the public about the importance of caring for the Earth.

Our Plan

After community mapping, it was uncovered how the space directly behind our school needs attention and care. Recently, the amount of trash and pet waste on the path has dramatically increased and is making it difficult and unpleasant for bike riders, hikers and runners to utilize. The students who participate in the K-Kids Program will write up a proposal to the local government advocating for clean-up and asking permission for placement of waste containers. In addition, the club will purchase and instal materials, create posters in both Spanish and English to educate the community around the needs of keeping the trail clean, and maintaining the Pet Waste Station.
