Native Plant Restoration

The Problem

Our school is located in a very urban neighborhood, and we are flanked on one side by an elevated subway and project housing on the other side. We have a small yard that is completely paved over with no opportunity or space to grow on school grounds. Last year we received access to a community garden that was underutilized and overgrown with lots of non-native species of plants. We worked hard at the end of last school year and this year to clean up the lot, build numerous raised beds for vegetable and plant growth and plan the space for the spring and summer. We wish to restore the space for native plants and create habitat for native pollinators.

Our Plan

Our students have worked with several organizations to harvest seeds from flowering plants that are native to NYC and are in the process of overwintering and seeding these seeds so they are ready to be transplanted into the garden. We will transplant the native flowering plants in early spring and care for and maintain the garden throughout the spring.
