The Problem

The goal of this project is teach students about gardening, and in doing so create a space where students and their families can visit to learn about composting, recycling and local vegetation. Teachers can use the area as an outdoor classroom during the school year. The raised beds will maintained by a team of teachers and students, the vegetables and herbs will be shared with students families. The courtyard area will have benches, birdhouses and other recycled garden ornaments that the students will create.

Our Plan

Students will begin planting indoors as part of the after school program. They will research what plants they want to grow and how much space they will need. They will also be learning about composting and what to collect. The Recycle Team will be collecting items to make bird feeders and other recycle sculptures that can be displayed in the courtyard. In the Spring the gardening program will begin and students will learn about their garden from "food to table". They will maintain the garden and keep journals to measure all aspects of garden .
