The Problem

The goal of this project is to increase community awareness of the importance of water conservation and of using alternative energy sources such as wind power to reduce pollution and provide electricity for our community. In addition, students will learn the importance of this issue for third world nations. By so doing, students will learn the importance of thinking globally, while taking local actions to have a positive impact upon the environment.

Our Plan

Students will learn the importance of utilizing alternative energy sources to generate electricity. First, they will read two books: "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" by William Kamkwamba, and "A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story" by Linda Sue Park. These two stories will transport students to two African nations where water conservation and energy production are essential for survival. Following their reading, students will explore alternative energy sources by creating miniature wind generators and solar cells. Next, students will devise a public program to promote water conservation and the use of alternative energy sources in our community. This program will include the creation and distribution of energy & water awareness stickers to younger students, as well as making and sharing an educational power point about their learning.
