Students engage in monthly cooking classes that focus on seasonal and healthy recipes. The 5th graders were eager to reduce their carbon emissions and support local farmers after learning about how they can reduce their impact on the environment. With this grant money, we will supplement our grocery store produce with more local ingredients, calculating the miles saved for each ingredient.

Our "Help Our Garden" project consists of beautifying our school garden by painting our wooden garden crates and making a welcoming banner to place at the entrance of the garden with the hope of attracting more visitors so they can take advantage of the fruits and vegetables that we grow there. We also help to sustain our garden by buying more seeds and gardening supplies.

Students will choose countries of Latin America to complete projects, including a written paper and a poster and or powerpoint presentation. They will include information about the country's air, food and health, and the human community and human condition in these areas of the world.

I will have the students to research Latin America and choose a country. The students will complete a research paper on the country specifying the air quality, food and health of the community. The students will study the communities and conditions of their country.

We will work in collaboration with the members of our group to create a proposal for our school to begin a change towards solar energy.

We have begun our garden seed by planting peas, garlic and onion in addition to our perennial herbs (sage and rosemary). We plan on planting, three types of squashes, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, parsley, basis, cilantro, brussel sprouts, and green beans. In the months of may and June, we plan on planting these vegetables from seeds by direct sowing them. We will need help to ensure that the plants are watered regularly throughout the summer months, when school is not in session.
