The project is to activate the garden in the community center ”Entre Amigos”. We will grow food, herbs and make experiments that will help the kids re-connect with the laws of nature and build better consumer habits. We will get sporadic visits from Fochican, a toothless chihuahua-mix rescue doggo, to encourage us with her magic tongue.
We will create a compost bin, we will fill garden beds with healthy soil, we will plant various seeds, and use our homemade compost to make the soil more nutrient-rich.
Our campaign will be successful if we are able to successfully compost the discarded lunch remains. Once added to the other grades garden beds, we hope to see growth. The garden beds are being replaced with non-toxic materials currently.
The 16 students will work with our Technology teacher and students to measure for, design, cut, construct, and install the shelving that was not included in the greenhouse. Once the shelves are installed, the students will begin growing plants and performing inquiry activities throughout this time. Once matured, flowering plants will be transferred into our Pollinator Garden, while vegetables will be used to create healthy recipes tbaf we will prepare in the Home Economies kitchen.
Specifically, we'll try to be more animated when standing at the front of the class - making our facial expressions more pronounced, using exaggerated hand gestures, changing the speed, tone and volume of our voice... we're trying it all! We also memorized a few cute tactics to refocus the group, whether this it's a clapping pattern or breathing exercise to calm the kids down, quiet their little mouths, and bring their attention forward.
It is important for us to wrap-up the lesson plan and ask them questions about things they learned. We’re testing out a few ways to do this to see which is more effective – will they respond more enthusiastically one-on-one or as a group? Will they actually be able to answer some of the questions posed to them? Examples: Individually, “can you trace the dinner you ate last night back to the soil?” As a group, “what are some of the behaviors you can do differently at home to make a difference?”
I will write a potential plan, I will approach the P&C in relation to same and if same is approved will invite parents and students to participate. I will start with year 1 - 3 and then move to other years. If the P&C refuses I may approach the City Council for some space to implement the project.
The students visiting the garden this week are in high school, so we want to test out our new Rainbow Ribbon Salad curriculum! This portion of the lesson will teach the value of “eating the rainbow” to get a variety of vitamins and nutrients in one’s diet. Our elevated curriculum will show older kids how to make healthier options in their everyday food choices. Specifically, they will be incorporating different plant parts on a home-made pizza as well as using all the colors of the rainbow to craft this delicious salad.
My project is simply to create awareness among all individuals that can spread the word on all issues regarding our home at large (Earth) and to bind together to create a strong community based on teaming together to do the necessary steps to accomplish the most eco friendly way of living, by watching what you eat, no meat or packaged foods need to be cut down or completely diminished. How many plants we grow a month, my aim is to grow one plant a month or more and to encourage others to want to do the same. To find ways of slowing down our carbon footprint and air pollution by not using cars as often and using solar power if we can. Also how we teach our children and our connectedness to the planet, and to teach our children that the world is at their feet and every footprint counts. Not only will the next generation be raised as aware loved kind and caring individuals but at the same time they will be the next leaders in a movement that is imperative the health and wellbeing of all living things.
