It is shown in studies that the way kids grow up affects the way they live the rest of their lives. When we see our community, we see ourselves in a way. We see the good parts and the bad parts. We see the kids playing in the parks, we see our cars, our homes, our schools, the buildings we work in. But, we also see the parts in us that we can improve on. One way we can improve the community is put in a garden. Our group of seven student plan to do a flower garden in the front of our school and put a vegetable garden in the back of the school. We think that putting this in could improve our school and the spirit that we have for it. One small change can make a big difference.

We will write poetry about the beauty of nature and the importance of living in peace. We will create books of these poems to share with our families and friends. We will also paint the panes of recycled windows to reflect the subjects of our poems and help students see the beauty around them.

We will be giving the students ownership of the project by letting them brainstorm areas of need in our community, and then plan a service project. We will be brainstorming on March 7.

In orderto create this project a reality, we will need as many volunteers as possible! We are planning to get some of our resources through the organization TreePeople and we really appreciate their help! We'll also need money to buy trees to plant, since there's a ton of space, but overall we just need lots of volunteers.

We will attempt to copy a design from Japan. Using plants appropriate for Minnesota we will decorate our back alley space. Currently the alley area is a mess with nothing but weeds and overgrown, old plants. We hope our special garden will stop people in their tracks so they too can enjoy a quiet, mindful moment of peace.
