Holiday Program at All Life Matters Sanctuary. A group of 16 to 18 children will be attending a holiday program at All Life Matters. The adult supervisor will assist the children in following the Roots and Shoots 4-step formula over a period of one week. Children will tour the facilities, be introduced to the various animals, be shown videos of Every Living Thing animal sanctuary in Dar es Salaam as well as Animal Ambulance rescue in Johannesburg. They will interview the various people working at the sanctuary, including the director, Moira. Once fully engaged they will map out the farm, observe areas that require improvement (this will also come from the various interviews on site). Children will decide on a short term remedy to complete during the holiday camp as well as long term ideas to continue supporting the animal haven following the service learning ethos of Roots and Shoots.
We are planting a variety of saplings and flowers in barren areas of the trails. This will help to make the trails more aesthetically pleasing.
Wellsville is a depressed area with a lot of run down lots and homes. The SAK Club would like to "pay it forward" to the community by creating places of beauty, relaxation and educational sites to help the community feed oneself and learn from the experience. When the project is finish and we can share it with the community by holding an "Open House" to showcase and education the public on its use.
As a class we will clear weeds and debris from the sectioned off area. We will then spread soil and plant native wild flowers and plants. We will then release butterflies that were raised from the larva stage in science class.
We will write an article about our project on our school website and newspaper asking pupils to join it. This program will run for 3 months, each week there will be a plan of activities we are going to do, so everyone can join it. The most active pupils will be awarded with precious gifts and a ticket to the cinema.
We are going to identify several native butterfly species and then research the types of plants they eat. Then we are going to look up what those plants need to grow and be healthy and plant them around our backyard!
