The app’s components will be quite diverse, including the following: a forum where eco-citizens can exchange information, and an events calendar which provides a user-friendly layout of the newsfeed, an Opportunities for Involvement button, which directs students to internships, summer programs, field trips, club-initiation resources, and workshops, such as TreePeople’s annual Youth Leadership Summit, the choose-from-a-list option containing clearly laid out project ideas, or the Eco Quiz for the less decisive, which guides the participant through questions regarding available funds, space, and administration’s disposition to help find a suitable project, and finally, a Support Resources page with apps and organizations who can lend support for eco-projects. We are very excited to say that we already have our App design company planned out -- they are called Palisadian Apps, and were started in 2016 by a high school student and his former technology teacher!

We will purchase a large recycling bin and place in the front of our school. We will create a large sign that says, "CAN YOU HELP US" to ask the community to help us by recycling cans. The money collected from the recycled cans will be used to purchase seeds for our school garden. We also wish to start a worm bin to reduce the amount of food being thrown away each day. The worm castings will use added as fertilizer to our school garden.

Our original idea was to make a completely recycled tree so we could educate the public on deforestation. We then branched out into Leaves for Trees. By reaching out to Whole Foods we secured sponsorship for our project. For every leaf someone put on our tree, Whole Foods would donate 1 dollar to Roots and Shoots. We then donated the money to Plant-it 2020, an organization that plants 1 indigenous tree for every 1 dollar donated.

The first step in the process was to complete a long survey of our school (Tom McCall Upper Elementary- Forest Grove) covering the topics of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle | Integrated Pest Management | Indoor Air Quality | Non-Toxic Products. We first had to get approval of the Administration Site Council. When this was done, we formed a committee of 5 members to interview our counselor to get the needed information.

My co-teacher and I are implementing a combined Roots & Shoots and Youth Service America (YSA) project in all of our Living Environment CTT classes (120 students) throughout the Human Impact Unit taught in April-May. We are having students identify the main cause of carbon emissions in the community using the mapping technique developed by Roots & Shoots. We are then having students write and implement community action plans in order to reduce carbon emissions in their community. Finally, students will be graded according to YSA’s 4C model of Career and Workforce Readiness: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.
