We will urge our local grocery stores and restaurants to reduce their reliance on single use plastic while offering information to the community about equally convenient alternatives. One of the activities we would like folks to participate in is a trash audit where we will tally the trash and find who is responsible for creating the waste found in our city. We will also educate people about starting their own kitchen compost while speaking at city hall meetings to propose adding compost bins to the community's trash collection. To learn more about our local waste facilities we will attend a tour of the current recycling facility and ask questions regarding composting. We plan to educate the public at our weekly farmers market in September about Food Literacy month (becoming aware of the effect our food has on our health, animals and the environment) and Hunger Month (awareness for the global hunger crisis) and come up with ways we can reduce our food waste and give back to those in need. Providing information such as 40% of food grown is wasted and that ironically we grow enough crops to feed 10-11 billion people which would solve world hunger, however, it is mostly fed to livestock, which leads to hazardous green house gas emissions. Offer some food for thought around food! Then we would like to wrap this all up by creating a community garden. Where the community can learn to grow their own food, and foster a stewardship of the land with provide many opportunities for connection, education and beautification.

The project seeks to get every house in Coleraine a small plant, if all goes to plan I'm going to enlist the help of the council and a few local garden centers! Hopefully we will have enough plants donated to us to complete this task by the end of next month preferably in a smaller amount of time.

Our project is to continue picking up litter and encourage others to do the same. While cleaning up the city we shall list and describe all the different wildlife and show how the animals make our neighborhood a better place to live. Some form of presentation about the animals who share our neighborhood may help others choose to help keep our city litter free and help people appreciate the animals who share our living places.

For this project we plan to educate the students of Canoga Park High School on the importance of recycling by furthering our previously established relationship with the school and current principal. In order to execute this process our program will be sending a handful of representatives to the school which will be delegated duties previously given to the Green-E Club, or Green Environment Club, at Canoga Park High School. Our scholars will be responsible for assisting this club with collecting recyclable materials, sorting said materials, and delivering said materials via provided vehicle transportation to the nearest recycling center to raise funding for the school as well as our program to reinvest back in the community for other projects.

For the third year now, the Tom McCall Roots&Shoots group has planned to take 3 field trips to Nana Cardoon Urban Farm and Learning Center. Our primary objective would be to explore and have “hands on” experience with natural food systems. Nana Cardoon offers a rich environment for developing understanding of plant growth, harvest, processing, preservation, and preparation. A secondary objective would be developing deeper connections to our community and its assets. Expanding our understanding of Forest Grove will help us develop meaningful community projects.

We planted Emperor Tulip bulbs, like others have done around the world. Because we live in zone 8, the protocol called for us to refrigerate our bulbs to ensure a proper wintering. We also chose to run an experiment with a second bed of bulb. These we planted November 1st. The other bed we planted January 10 (as the protocol asked for). We created journals to record observations as to when they emerged and when they bloomed. This data we reported to Journey North. It was interesting to find that the earlier planted bulbs (experiment bed) emerged first and bloomed first, but they did not look as healthy as the later planted bulbs. They were a bit twisted and stunted. The wintering of bulbs did make a difference!

We will get various type of plants to plant outside in this garden. These plants should be able to resist the elements. We will also use various tools such as shovels to help us dig holes. We are planning on putting many rocks around the garden with positive messages on them. Lastly, we will put benches and other areas to sit in for students in the garden.
