Our action will showcase how other schools in our district and our community can utilize more efficient irrigation and utilize drought tolerant plants to create a practical and aesthetically pleasing garden. Our project will be a means to educate others in mindful irrigation that uses less water. Students will use the garden as a platform to teach other students, their parents, our staff and community about how our garden operates and sustains using less water than a traditional garden. Students as Junior Gardeners will help care for the garden, we will have community garden work days, and staff will take an active role in maintaining and improving upon the garden.

Our yearly invasion of Heal the Bay's outstanding Coastal Cleanup endeavor teaches our kids that you can make a difference and empowers them to take action on causes close to their heart, which is a Roots and Shoots mantra. We also use this early fall event to kick off our year-long campaign about environmental education. This day is an integral part of that.

Our project will educate in addition to reducing the use of plastic and litter on campus. It will also increase the students appreciation for nature. We will do this with the help of our club members, school staff, community residents and other organizations.

One group( 4th grade) will construct a rain barrel, in which an ooze hose will water a near by butterfly garden/ vegetable garden, which will be planned and planted by another group (3rd grade). Any food raised will add organic choices to our cafeteria salad bar or be donated to the hungry. We will also petition administration for an Earth Day out of uniform Day to improve student's awareness. Fifth grade will build a compost pile bin, make a petition to our student government to try to acquire permission to place compost recycle bins in the cafeteria, and will be in charge of planning manual up keep . Second grade will educate Preschool classes, in interesting ways, about the importance of the above Recycle/reuse/reduce methods being done by the other grades.

We envision 400+ students and their families will learn about plastic marine debris. They will be engaged and challenged to make a difference which in a small way will work towards keeping our beautiful coastal location cleaner. The benefit depends on how our investment in the next generation plays out. If we are able to impart the importance of reducing the use of plastics as well as recycling, we will not only be encouraging the students to keep the environment cleaner, we will be showing them how to conserve not only natural resources such as petroleum and natural gas, but also landfill space. By using our art exhibit, we bring a visual and interactive presentation to engage the students in this project and teach them about the negative impact of plastic marine debris on marine biota. It will be a unique introduction to this global problem. Educational materials will encourage participation in the clean-ups. These clean-ups will show them firsthand the extent to which careless dropping moves so close to entering the ocean and the amount that exists in the environment. Press releases and emails to our local community will highlight the endeavors of these young students.

Our project will take many, many pounds of largely non-recyclable plastic packaging out of the waste stream as well as removing litter from our community and the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Our bench will also be a visual representation of how much litter we generate and the possibilities of repurposing it. Since February 2014, we have been saving all of our plastic packaging, both from home and from school, as well as using all of the plastic litter from our school campus, and stuffing it into bottles to make bottle bricks. Our after-school club constructs bottle bricks; students in my class make bottle bricks by choice at recess or other free time, and students and staff make bottle bricks at home. We are working with a local nonprofit and with the East Coast representative of the international Peace on Earthbench Movement to construct our bench.

Incorporating the work of the on-going nautical archeology research, the Rockley Bay Research Project (RBRP) and highlighting the importance of the island's cultural heritage to effect change.
