Riley and I have decided to host a river cleanup with the help of a friend of Mrs. Judah’s; Stephanie Bastianon. Once she responds we hope that our classmates, families, and the community will show up to make our beautiful Petaluma gorgeous.

We plan to create a beautiful space at our school in three stages. Stage 1 will be to clear out the dead brush and invasive species (with help from the Tree People organization). Stage 2 will be to create a terraced hillside using large planks of wood and steel pipes (mimicking the terraced backyard of the Gamble House next door). Stage 3 will be to select and plant native species that grow well in the shade of our beautiful existing oak trees.

We will take over and existing plot of dirt and create a beautiful butterfly garden at our middle school that will inspire us to be our best and to stand up for peace.

Our project is to beautify the outside area of our classroom. We will learn how deep to plant natives that require very little water. We will redo an area that was a small rock garden that would create a quiet place to sit. We want an area to grow seedlings that is close to us and right outside our door is perfect. We will get first grade size tools to empower our class to do our own work. We need a new compost bucket in this area to collect our breakfast, snack and lunch waste so we can contribute to our vermicomposting in our big garden. We would like to put a layer of bark over the ground to limit water loss and keep weeds to a minimum.

Our class will study soil quality, sun duration, and survey available water for the planting beds across our campus. We will also inventory and identify existing plants on campus. Finally, we will work with this information to identify the best choices to meet our long-term, low water, native plant goals to fill these mostly-blank spaces with beautiful plant life.

We will clean up the creek and the path next to it. I will make flyers to send out to my community to invite people to help beautify the creek.

My project will clean up our local beach and I will work with my school to offer service learning to students who want to participate in this event.

The third grade teachers (we have 10) will ask for parent volunteers to help us create an outdoor stream that we will create to teach and model how erosion happens. We have an outdoor science learning area that we will use to create our stream. Students will see how soil erodes when the proper ground cover is not in place and we will discuss how we can create solutions to erosion problems around our school and in our community. When the students see the erosion happening, they will get a true understanding of the importance of erosion control.

Using our Ecology Club's funds and grants from several foundations, we will draft a design plan and budget. Once approved by local administrators, we will employ the help of over 50 BHS Ecology Club members to bring the garden project into reality. Yearly funds raised by the Eco Club would be used to maintain the garden and the compost bin.
