The target demographic is women in their freshman and sophomore years of high school when they are starting to consider the possibility of college and potential career paths. Our program will give a group of 5-10 girls the opportunity to acquire hands on experience working in a wildlife rescue. They will come in once or twice a month to build skills in animal husbandry and enrichment, learn about the zoological field and be guided through the mentorship of female animal curators at the Rescue. The girls will also work on a scientific project in which they will be instructed to study a specific animal and devise a suitable enrichment activity. For example, a puzzle with food rewards for monkeys. They then can create a report or presentation for science classes, or science fairs, etc. In addition to career development, our program will provide a therapeutic outlet to girls who may have difficulties at home, or in their communities. Working with animals and spending time in nature has been proven to reduce stress, aid in depression, and boost mood. This experience will help these girls to develop team-working skills, encourage female empowerment, become environmentally conscious and moreover, get them focused and inspired for their future.
All of us will contribute the blacktop every Friday, putting in our time and money, and devote ourselves to getting this project done. We are planning on using PVC pipes to create the soccer goals. We are also going to repaint the blacktop lines, and possibly fix our basketball hoops.
Change the habits of people through example. It is a community service project. If I see garbage that "someone" throws, I take a picture of it, I pick it up, I throw it where it belongs and I take a picture again. Using the layout application I upload them to a facebook group called: Leave it better that what we found. It's a closed group were I try to encourage people to do the same or at least think twice before throwing waste on the street.
The profit from this will be used to buy the everyday necessities, which we have, for people around the world. We are collecting the Gratitude of the people who are lucky enough to have the things that they have and transferring them into supplies for people who do not have the things that they need through the World Vision organization website.
We are builing a learning garden and creating curriculum for all subjects to get more of our community outside and learning.
Our project will make a more positive environment. We will pass out treats and smiles to strangers. The reward is seeing them smile. Everyone knows life’s hard but a smile makes you push a little harder or take another go at something a smile can really impact someone’s day.
Students will be working in groups to learn more about hydroponics, the nonprofit SEED, and ways that learning Arduino-hydroponics farming techniques might help urban communities like South LA. As this is our first year working on the project, we will start small--by installing small hydroponics systems with Arduino sensors in a small community garden. We hope that this will impact students by helping them make a difference within their own communities and help develop advocacy skills around food justice issues. We were inspired by the work by Steven Ritz, founder of the Green Bronx Machine in the South Bronx, NYC.
we are three members.we will start from schools and daycares to tell childern about oral health and go to shelter houses.we will provide them tooth brushes and toothpaste.
Our community garden days will take place every 3rd Saturday of each month. The funding provided by this Roots and Shoots grant will help in cleaning up part of the 24th Street Garden. With this funding, we will purchase materials needed to prepare a section of the garden so that students can plant winter crops.
Women’s Empowerment Club will work together to help build community housing. The Club ladies will give their time and volunteer in building habitat homes. All young ladies of the Club range from 17 to 18, all are High School Students. Not only will they help in the building aspect, they will also help feed the workers and help with paperwork and working with the children and potential home owners while the parents are in seminars.
