We will create a compost bin, we will fill garden beds with healthy soil, we will plant various seeds, and use our homemade compost to make the soil more nutrient-rich.

We volunteered this summer in a junior gardening program with students from Waukegan. We helped to teach about the importance of composting and how it can give back important nutrients to our soil and decrease hazards to the environment. We also picked up fresh produce from areas where it was not needed and delivered it to food pantries and community organizations that distributed it to people who do need it. Watching the "Wasted", Anthony Bourdain, documentary was also very helpful in understanding the problem. We also gleaned at a local farm and delivered that produce to people who needed it.

Our campaign will be successful if we are able to successfully compost the discarded lunch remains. Once added to the other grades garden beds, we hope to see growth. The garden beds are being replaced with non-toxic materials currently.

We want to create a weekly news and information program the helps to showcase the amazing things we are doing as a school to the local community. Our hope is to video record this information and put it out on our website as a weekly update.

The 16 students will work with our Technology teacher and students to measure for, design, cut, construct, and install the shelving that was not included in the greenhouse. Once the shelves are installed, the students will begin growing plants and performing inquiry activities throughout this time. Once matured, flowering plants will be transferred into our Pollinator Garden, while vegetables will be used to create healthy recipes tbaf we will prepare in the Home Economies kitchen.

We will start by introducing 4th-6th grade students to sustainable options which can be used in lieu of plastic and styrofoam products. NOTE: Many of these students have gone through the Kids for Positive Change program and are familiar with skipping the straw, using reusable straws, bags and bottles. We also will work with a community restaurant owner who actively composts, and teach students about the benefits of composting. We'd like to set up a composting station at school and continue our school recycling program. We will have students research sustainable and compostable products, like utensils made from corn and cups made from wheat and provide them with materials to "build" their own compostable products. A main focus will be raising awareness about plastic bag pollution and promoting the use of reusable bags. Much like our Classroom-Community Action Assignment: "The Last Plastic Straw Ashtabula Campaign," we will have students launch a similar campaign about plastic bags. Students will present at Ashtabula City Council and Board of Education meeting about zero waste and how to move toward making Ashtabula Area City Schools a Zero Waste / Sustainable School System!

We will be reusing items (pallets, plastic bottles, cardboard boxes) to create a small community garden with tomatoes. It will be in the children's play area on the church grounds and will be free and open for anyone to utilize!

The young entrepreneurs will be engaging with their local communities through the Roots & Shoots Formula Toolkit. Planned events aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals build on the SDG "Heroes for Change" comic series where the participants will earn a badge for each of the Sustainable Development Goal activities that they participate in - eg Mother Earth Day and World Environment Day (22 April and 5 June) which support Goals 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production and 13 Climate Action - both days are focussed on Act to end Plastic - Beat Plastic Pollution.
