The project is to activate the garden in the community center ”Entre Amigos”. We will grow food, herbs and make experiments that will help the kids re-connect with the laws of nature and build better consumer habits. We will get sporadic visits from Fochican, a toothless chihuahua-mix rescue doggo, to encourage us with her magic tongue.

This project aims to raise awareness about the effects of illegal use of poisoned baits in the natural environment, biodiversity and society. More specifically, we will educate students of semi-urban environments on the effects of pesticides against rodents on the trophic webs, using Tyto alba (Barn-owls) as a case study. Moreover, we will build and place nest-boxes around schools and provide students with instructions on how to build their own. In this way, we are setting an example on how rodent populations can be locally controlled by barn-owls rather than pesticides.

The next step is to organize this information to a powerpoint and spread it to our social circle (like clubs, organizations, schools etc). The last step is to inform and try to sensitize some of the local food industries and persuade them to stop the use of palmoil in their products.

Already many students from Pre-K to 6th grade are pausing in the hallway to engage in the proprioception activities that have been provided. The hope is that more students will continue to utilize the activities as they transition from classes, or simply need a break from academia. To determine the success of our campaign, classroom polls and surveys can be taken. This quantitative data will help us gauge whether or not our centers should extend to our playground, which would be our next step in completing our building wide brain break initiative.

Students will research recipes for salads, healthy snacks and simple lunch ideas based on environmentally conscious practices. Greek products will be the focus. The work will be compiled in an e-book form.

We volunteered this summer in a junior gardening program with students from Waukegan. We helped to teach about the importance of composting and how it can give back important nutrients to our soil and decrease hazards to the environment. We also picked up fresh produce from areas where it was not needed and delivered it to food pantries and community organizations that distributed it to people who do need it. Watching the "Wasted", Anthony Bourdain, documentary was also very helpful in understanding the problem. We also gleaned at a local farm and delivered that produce to people who needed it.
