The Barr Middle School project will teach students about plants, insects, and growing vegetables. Students are planning the layout of the garden, the kind of plants they will use, preparing a proposal to submit, and raising money to fund the project. Step two will be to purchase plants, prepare soil, and plant the garden. Students will set up a schedule for summer care.

My project will increase pollinator populations that are native to california by creating pollinator habitats that are filled with native plants from california and as a result promote pollinator populations because it will increase the number of plants that are specific to them. These plants will will be grown in verticle gardens and in raised beds near a raised bed vegetable garden. The pollinaotrs will pollinate the vegetable garden because they are so close in promiximity and as a result there will be a larger harvest yeild. The harvest yeild will be then donated to a local food pantry

Our project will focus on making our area outside of our classroom more beautiful and safe. Many of our students live in apartments and do not have gardens at home. We want to continue to have this beautiful outdoor area where students can learn about growing vegetables and fruits but we need to replace some of the planters and benches because they are very old. This grant will allow us to continue to have this valuable space for our students.

We will invite some parents to help us build the bed. We have community work days, so we could build it then - or during school day.We already grow a lot of food in our garden, you can see our designs for the bed. We might grow purple potatoes or pumpkins in our new bed! Although we have lots of beds that need fixing, we would like to start on rebuilding our first one with a Roots and Shoots campaign and grant!

We will be measuring the amount of compost that is produced every week and track the usage of compost over time. We also hope to survey students on whether they actually use the composting bins that we have implemented. Finally, as a last measure, we will do soil testing through our AP Environmental Science class to see whether the composting regions are more nutrient rich.
