We would like to purchase a tree or trees to plant in our schoolyard or locally. We would like our students to write an article for our local newspaper about the importance of trees. This article will also focus on deforestation and its negative impacts locally, nationally and globally. This article will also feature the endangered orangutan and hyacinth macaw, two species that depend on trees for survival. We also would like to educate our school and community about palm oil and how palm oil plantations are contributing to deforestation. Lastly, we'd like to introduce sustainable palm oil options or alternatives, in our foods and products, to our school and community.

Our "Help Our Garden" project consists of beautifying our school garden by painting our wooden garden crates and making a welcoming banner to place at the entrance of the garden with the hope of attracting more visitors so they can take advantage of the fruits and vegetables that we grow there. We also help to sustain our garden by buying more seeds and gardening supplies.

Our KYE-YAC Roots & Shoots group joined with the Sister City Foundation to participate in a local Peace Day celebration called Seeds of Peace. We will celebrate peace through art, chalk art, on the sidewalk running through the park. We will engage kids and adults to take part and share their vision of peace through art – and a little play!

For our project we will work with the Green Mountain Falls Trails Committee buy and install at least one bear-proof trash can. We will also create student signs to educate and encourage people to pick up after their dogs. This signs will be installed along the trail. Lastly, we will design and build boxes for dog bags. Here people can repurpose plastic bags and people who do not have a bag with them will have a way to clean up after their dog.

We will be learning about this during our weekly Roots & Shoots after school enrichment time. We will be using Project Learning Tree curriculum to understand more about our environment and the human impact that we have through our everyday actions. We will learn more about what plants and trees are around us and how they help us and how we can help them. We will investigate which plants and trees we need more of to balance our local ecosystem. We will be able to identify what plants and trees we currently have and, if needed, plant additional trees and plants.

If our Project is successful it will help everyone in our Valley to live more healthful lives. If we do not want the Inversion type climate that has overtaken the Wasatch Front then we, on the Wasatch Back need to start planting trees to off set the carbon footprint created by our fast growing population. Please plant at least one tree. I own 1/3rd of an acre and I have planted four trees with plenty of space for more.
