Our project will provide sanctuary for local wildlife, including but not limited to birds and insects. While we have some plants already that attract critters, we would like to incorporate more native plantings, which will also allow this to be a low water use yard. Our plan is to remove the remaining sections of lawn, and replace them with native grasses and flowers that would attract the bird, insect, and other local animal populations, incorporating the new plantings with the ones already established.

We are going to improve two areas on either side of the steps that lead up to our school. We are going to consider the drainage issues and potential plants that can enhance these areas while being conscious of the environmental impact on the landscape.

My 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 classes learned that seed balls made gardening easy, fun, and accessible. They learned that seed balls grow endangered wildflowers needed by pollinators, protect seeds from wind, birds, squirrels, and other critters, and has easy dispersal for more uniform coverage. So, they hand-rolled approximately 1,000 seed balls and shared them with their families and friends by distributing the seed balls with planting directions (the “guerilla” method of tossing the seed balls while hiking was the most popular to write about!) to entire school to take home to plant in their gardens. Many of my 2018-2019 class got to take these seed balls home as second graders and came into my third grade class at the beginning of this year not only wanting to make more seed balls, but teach our school something about our garden through a mural. So, my 2018-2019 class’ plan of action is to not only make more seed balls to share with our school community, but also to work with our 5th grade classrooms who are planning to help create the mural as part of their legacy gift to the school when they promote in the spring.

Our project will put the final touches on a year long endeavor by our students to raise community awareness of recycling by: reducing, reusing and recycling trash into an artistic sculpture.

I am going to create a team of people from my town. First, we are going to go door to door and ask people if they want to take action and save the bees. We will ask them to sign a petition saying they will not use harmful chemicals (pesticides, herbicides) on their property. We can also educate our neighbors about non-toxic methods to manage their yards. Second, we will go to town hall and ask to use public lands to plant bee gardens in the spring. A bee garden will include wildflowers, milk weed, bee homes, and a water bee bath with pebbles.

This project will allow for more meaningful inquiry with students at the middle school level, as the plot is on school grounds and is quickly accessible from the classroom. It will also allow for a connection between the community and the school, as the plot is accessible to the public from the street, and will include signage as well as some common plants community members may already know. We will have a variety of seating available for the public and students to utilize to best fit their needs. There is already a young plot on the grounds, but the funds for seating, bird feeders, and bee hotels is yet to be secured. I have local experts and craftsman who are available for quality assurance of all tangible parts brought into this area.

For this project we plan to educate the students of Canoga Park High School on the importance of recycling by furthering our previously established relationship with the school and current principal. In order to execute this process our program will be sending a handful of representatives to the school which will be delegated duties previously given to the Green-E Club, or Green Environment Club, at Canoga Park High School. Our scholars will be responsible for assisting this club with collecting recyclable materials, sorting said materials, and delivering said materials via provided vehicle transportation to the nearest recycling center to raise funding for the school as well as our program to reinvest back in the community for other projects.

The garden is being installed in phases. We began in May and are continuing over the summer. We hope to have everything planted by the fall and complete the signage during the winter and spring. We have 3 species’ sections planted so far, yarrow, narrow-leaf milkweed and hummingbird sage.

The plant markers will complete a small version of an arboretum right on campus, students can learn about the native plants and the wildlife that is attracted by the flora. Students can create markers for the wildlife that is attracted as well as creating an environmental marker showing water usage and climate appropriate plants. This will be done in my environmental science class during the school year, students could give tours and teach classmates about the native garden.
