We want to build an "outdoor classroom" that will use the land, sea, and sky of our Bronx campus to provide opportunities to learn and protect our environment, share with our neighbors and give our students opportunities to gain practical skills and have outside fun. We will build and grow a container garden producing flowers for our neighbors in the nursing home next door, vegetables for a soup kitchen on Fordham Road, pollinator plants to support bees and butterflies, and other plants that are native to this area, like berries, sassafras, and June berries. We want to restore the Indian kettle in the river and add an oyster restoration project to help filter the river naturally. We want to add a weather station to help forecast severe weather since our neighborhood and school were crushed by Hurricane Sandy. All of these things will help us to lead environmental stewardship efforts in our corner of the Bronx.
To obtain and organize the items to create the care packages, my Roots & Shoots club will hold a collection drive outside of our local department store for supplies. When customers go inside, club members will provide them with a list of recommended items that while they are shopping could pick up and donate to us on their way out. To create the packages, the club will hold an event at school to discuss the problem of homelessness including facts to rid of the stigma surrounding these people and instead find ways to support them during this difficult time even beyond care packages.
To complete this project my Roots & Shoots group will hold a week long Thanksgiving Food Drive collecting nonperishable goods from the community and a 2 week long fundraising competition between the different parts of my school to raise money for the turkeys. My club will also decorate boxes to decorate in order to put the 150 meals in to deliver to the families.
The project would take place in March, April, and May 2017 when Haiti Plunge high school youth teams will be on-site in Haiti to work on the project with their Haitian peers.
Our group was divided into groups: mix the materials; fill and weigh bags; seal the packages and pack boxes. We received training and worked for over 4 hours to make the goal. At the end of the three days there were more than 90,000 meals ready to be shipped!

Planting season in Haiti begins in April. Haiti Plunge Inc. sends teams of high school and college youth to Haiti eight times annually. An American high school team will be in Haiti April 15 - 24, 2016. The team will work with Haitian secondary students from our cooperative to purchase, distribute and assist the children with planting the Mango trees. The team will also teach the children the importance of controlling soil erosion and the relationship of the trees roots to the earth.
This is one of the largest projects of the year for my Roots & Shoots group. We need to organize volunteers, advertise, begin collections, correspond with the school to hold the event and much more.
Our project will support those in our community who need food. We will advertise and organize volunteers for our food drive in the morning and then hold the drive, count the number of goods we collected and donate the cans, etc to our local nonprofit organization Neighbor To Neighbor.
