My project will address the issue of reusing things to make enjoyable toys for animals as well as making a book share at the zoo that the visitors can donate books as well as take and read while at zoo. My project will also include raising butterflies and teaching the public about how the grow, benefit the environment, and mainly educate them about the importance of butterflies as well as what types of plants you can plant in your garden to help them and provide a home for them. I am in the student volunteer at the LA Zoo so I will be achieving this project with some of the other student volunteers. I will do this by asking for donations of books from the other student volunteers and my friends at school.

Our project is to continue picking up litter and encourage others to do the same. While cleaning up the city we shall list and describe all the different wildlife and show how the animals make our neighborhood a better place to live. Some form of presentation about the animals who share our neighborhood may help others choose to help keep our city litter free and help people appreciate the animals who share our living places.

I am going to create a team of people from my town. First, we are going to go door to door and ask people if they want to take action and save the bees. We will ask them to sign a petition saying they will not use harmful chemicals (pesticides, herbicides) on their property. We can also educate our neighbors about non-toxic methods to manage their yards. Second, we will go to town hall and ask to use public lands to plant bee gardens in the spring. A bee garden will include wildflowers, milk weed, bee homes, and a water bee bath with pebbles.

This project will allow for more meaningful inquiry with students at the middle school level, as the plot is on school grounds and is quickly accessible from the classroom. It will also allow for a connection between the community and the school, as the plot is accessible to the public from the street, and will include signage as well as some common plants community members may already know. We will have a variety of seating available for the public and students to utilize to best fit their needs. There is already a young plot on the grounds, but the funds for seating, bird feeders, and bee hotels is yet to be secured. I have local experts and craftsman who are available for quality assurance of all tangible parts brought into this area.

The project will be sequential starting with school community, town, and then world. Learners will first learn what a community is and how they are a part of a larger group of people. Then taking what they know about their school community will apply towards their town. They will participate in a community mapping inventory to determine within the three areas: beautification, landscape, plants, and trees, and wildlife; how they can enhance the town they live in. Finally, after the mapping complete a project based on at least on of the three focuses. If possible connect with another second grade class to blog about their learning.
