The project, growing, planting and harvesting will take three months. We have an existing garden and four classes that come in. We'll get the seeds, have the kids plant them and care for them and tend to them, and keep a record of what they see and learn in their garden journals.

The PLAN for the next three years: 2018, 2019, and 2020. Yield of avocados and oranges depends upon climate. Will we or won't we have rain? Because our trees are mature, their roots run deep. Trees do well with 15 minutes of water from two sprinklers once a week. Avocado tree provides seeds that sprout easily. Morning dew collected in rain barrel is used to water seeds. Going forward in 2018, avocado seeds will be sprouted to create plants to donate. Oranges will continue to be harvested and donated.

We would love to have a garden to table cooking club. We would use this mini-grant to purchase classroom cooking materials. We will harvest from our outdoor garden space as well as herbs grown in our classroom. My students have expressed interest in having a before school breakfast cookshop. We have a homeless shelter at our corner, we would love to partner with them and provide needy people with food from our harvest and cooking club.

This will include the free coding classes we will teach (through Orange County Coding), as well as supplying them with proper clothes and hygiene products. If we receive the grant, we can supply them with feminine hygiene products. Those items are the needed the most in these shelters because they are donated the least.

Students will be working in groups to learn more about hydroponics, the nonprofit SEED, and ways that learning Arduino-hydroponics farming techniques might help urban communities like South LA. As this is our first year working on the project, we will start small--by installing small hydroponics systems with Arduino sensors in a small community garden. We hope that this will impact students by helping them make a difference within their own communities and help develop advocacy skills around food justice issues. We were inspired by the work by Steven Ritz, founder of the Green Bronx Machine in the South Bronx, NYC.

The Roots & Shoots club will collaborate to come up with fun activities to hold each day and causes to benefit from these activities.

My wish is to bring a team of people to the festive, fun 5K run/walk for charity that draws hundreds of participants in my state as volunteers. Volunteers will help set up for the event, usher participants during the entire event, and help with other activities.
