Our Roots & Shoots group will take part in a community celebration called "Seeds of Peace" by working with youth in honor of the International Day of Peace. We plan to read the book, "THE PEACE TREE FROM HIROSHIMA: THE LITTLE BONSAI WITH A BIG STORY" to them, as it is also the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. We will have bonsai trees with us and tree seedlings to pass out to the kids to take home with them so they will hopefully grow their own bonsai tree.

Bring the beauty and art of music to the community. We will work with children daily to ensure the musical education aspect is broadened in their span of life. The opportunities will be visible to all qualified families in the community.
Portugal
We will raise the peace dove and distribute flyers about Roots & Shoots during the "Global Energy Race - Lisbon runs for Peace" which will take place on September 27th downtown Lisbon. We invited all Portuguese Roots & Shoots groups to join us to celebrate this day as a big family.

We want to raise awareness about how coyotes serve an important part in our ecosystem and impact everything from trees to water. We want to help people understand that predators should be respected, but not disliked. We will work with our class and park services in order to learn the proper information to share with others.
Japan
We will talk about peace.

Our group of Middle School students will be creating a jig, then measuring, cutting, heating and sealing the ends of specific lengths of paracord in preparation to make Quick Deploy Bracelets. Once all of the rope has been prepped and our group feels confident in their ability to teach others how to make the bracelets, they are going to raise awareness throughout our school community and teach others to make bracelets as well.

Enable the children and their families to share their gardening efforts with the local community (be it insect or human!) by providing vegetables, herbs and spices. We are building our second garden box, made from salvaged resources like wood pallets. The design and inspiration came from the website: http://foodisfreeproject.org/ Constructing and maintaining these garden boxes improves the environment and exposes the children to gardening skills and new foods for health. May also be an opportunity to spotlight certain herbs, spices or plants to educate children about other cultures (through cuisine or other cultural traditions) - building bridges between cultures. To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson "To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition."
