Alverno students are building 2 x 1000-liter aquaponics systems. The project impacts students by engaging them in meaningful scientific practices, and the local and global community will benefit through education and outreach. Local outreach will take the form of educational presentations to local schools, as well as an informational website. In addition to an invaluable learning experience for the students in an important emerging farming technology to address the food global crisis, the knowledge acquired will enable the students to provide technical support and outreach to local and global communities.

We will put in some plumbing on the pipes that leave the sand filter. This new plumbing is a device that will re-route the water into two hoses. The hoses will then run along the fence until they reach our two gardens that have trees

Our project is to grow vegetables in an aquaponics system. Goldfish will also grow to help produce the proper amounts of nitrogen to cycle through the system and help sustain the growth of our plants. We will complete water testing for nutrients and pH levels to make sure our plants and fish are happy and healthy.

This project consists of a series of 6 gardening classes throughout the summer where we demonstrate and engage youth ages 2-8 in planting, growing and eating foods such as: peas, carrots strawberries and melons. Each tot receives a 2'x2' area in a community garden plot to plant seeds and harvest their own food. We also have a strawberry patch where tots learn to pick and eat fresh, sweet & juicy strawberries! Each tot starts off the season by painting their name on a brick to mark their spot in the garden. We offer fresh snacks, usually donations from other gardeners, every class. We also have a short story about planting and growing food at the end of each class :)

Our project will inform the residents of Alexandria City of the concerns involving plastic waste and the overall need for a cleaner community. We believe through this project, our students will be impassioned to transcend the community and help Alexandria become a city of historical and environmental conservation.

Our TaylorAde Healthy Kids (THKC)Project will support our community wide healthy eating initiative. Our THKC members will be responsible for promoting healthy eating habits by conducting informative, fun, healthy eating workshops weekly. By creating healthy eating posters to post around schools, and public family friendly spaces will help inform recruitment of parent and student volunteers to help promote awareness the hunger issues and encourage healthy eating habits in the East Brooklyn Community. We will offer nutritious eating workshops for parents, children and seniors as well provide informational resources to food pantries and food supplement centers. We are very interested in partnering with the Food Bank of NY to provide Healthy Bucks for Families in need. By partnering with the Food Bank, THKC will receive exposure through our comprehensive media campaigns, event and campaign materials, website, quarterly newsletter and monthly E-Newsletter. Food Bank For New York City offers dynamic partnership opportunities from our high profile organizations and media outlets all to help end hunger throughout the five boroughs.

Our group is working to prepare a resilient garden space. We have a small garden space currently, but are trying to expand the space by building bioswales to catch water and divert water from the upcoming El Nino. The students will plant seeds along the bioswale, and divert the water's path so that rather than flooding, the water can be used to water the garden. The project is a cross-curricular project that includes math, science, and environmental studies. Hopefully, the project will grow to include other classes. For the past few years, Los Angeles has experienced drought, and because of this the ground is hard, and plants have died. This coming winter, Los Angeles is projected to have one of the wettest seasons in recent years. Because the drought has left the ground hard-packed, and the plants whose roots prevented erosion on the hillside have died, our campus is in danger of flooding in several areas. We are working on a larger project because we found that our school sits on a covered arroyo that begins at the local high school. We will map the arroyo's path as part of our project. They will work with local historians and archivists to find the path of water as it would have entered our campus before it was paved over. The students will map the path of water on our campus, and use that to work on the bioswales. Several classrooms are prone to flooding, and the water, when it does rain, eventually ends up in storm drains. The students would like to divert the water to benefit the garden rather than having flooding and runoff. We need tools like shovels and spades to construct, seeds to plant, and a couple of cameras to document where water collects, and to take before and after photos.

We will grow organic food for student families and those in need. The process will go through an entire growing season to instill the processes necessary to growing healthy organic food in a community garden. We will appoint team leaders that will have specific responsiblities as well as individual responsiblities given to students for proper plant management. A Garden Manager will provide weekly guidance and lessons that incorporate soil sampling, proper watering regimens as well as pest management that will be put into ACTION to instill confidence in our children through growing food, reconnection to the soil and a broader understanding of nature.
