Our TaylorAde Healthy Kids (THKC)Project will support our community wide healthy eating initiative. Our THKC members will be responsible for promoting healthy eating habits by conducting informative, fun, healthy eating workshops weekly. By creating healthy eating posters to post around schools, and public family friendly spaces will help inform recruitment of parent and student volunteers to help promote awareness the hunger issues and encourage healthy eating habits in the East Brooklyn Community. We will offer nutritious eating workshops for parents, children and seniors as well provide informational resources to food pantries and food supplement centers. We are very interested in partnering with the Food Bank of NY to provide Healthy Bucks for Families in need. By partnering with the Food Bank, THKC will receive exposure through our comprehensive media campaigns, event and campaign materials, website, quarterly newsletter and monthly E-Newsletter. Food Bank For New York City offers dynamic partnership opportunities from our high profile organizations and media outlets all to help end hunger throughout the five boroughs.

Our group is working to prepare a resilient garden space. We have a small garden space currently, but are trying to expand the space by building bioswales to catch water and divert water from the upcoming El Nino. The students will plant seeds along the bioswale, and divert the water's path so that rather than flooding, the water can be used to water the garden. The project is a cross-curricular project that includes math, science, and environmental studies. Hopefully, the project will grow to include other classes. For the past few years, Los Angeles has experienced drought, and because of this the ground is hard, and plants have died. This coming winter, Los Angeles is projected to have one of the wettest seasons in recent years. Because the drought has left the ground hard-packed, and the plants whose roots prevented erosion on the hillside have died, our campus is in danger of flooding in several areas. We are working on a larger project because we found that our school sits on a covered arroyo that begins at the local high school. We will map the arroyo's path as part of our project. They will work with local historians and archivists to find the path of water as it would have entered our campus before it was paved over. The students will map the path of water on our campus, and use that to work on the bioswales. Several classrooms are prone to flooding, and the water, when it does rain, eventually ends up in storm drains. The students would like to divert the water to benefit the garden rather than having flooding and runoff. We need tools like shovels and spades to construct, seeds to plant, and a couple of cameras to document where water collects, and to take before and after photos.

We will grow organic food for student families and those in need. The process will go through an entire growing season to instill the processes necessary to growing healthy organic food in a community garden. We will appoint team leaders that will have specific responsiblities as well as individual responsiblities given to students for proper plant management. A Garden Manager will provide weekly guidance and lessons that incorporate soil sampling, proper watering regimens as well as pest management that will be put into ACTION to instill confidence in our children through growing food, reconnection to the soil and a broader understanding of nature.

Beginning September 21 and Finishing at the end of November, 2015. The first week will be design. The second will be construction. The third will be planting. Plants will be edible, symbiotic and sustainable.

We are creating a "Pop Up" Garden. All teachers will have access to grow kits with engaging, exploratory activities. They will create satellite gardens all over our campus through the use of grow bags. Once we reach harvest then our community non-profit partner, Cooking With Gabby, will come in and cook the harvest with each grade level as a harvest meal. A group of students will train to be "master" gardeners after school and will support teachers using their grow kits.

We will trace our water sources in our area including going on a field trip as described: We could follow the water from Windsor Lake to the pumps at Diamond Valley Ballfields. The water leaves the lake and travels thru a set of meters then travels over catch grates and down to Chimney Park. There it is goes thru a diversion box where some of the water stays at and Eastman and the rest goes under a few houses and a few more diversion boxes where it stops at Diamond Pond where it can be pumped out to water the fields or returned to the ditch and back to the Poudre River. This will help our students to have a better understanding about the infrastruction of our water system. We will also have speakers that help them to better understand the current issue of building more storage for our water to keep it here in our area. They will also have the chance to be part of the Weld County Well Watch program that tests temperature, nitrates, disolved oxygen level, depth and pH. This knowledge will help them to decide how we want to inform our community on the effects of our water shortages. We ultimately want our students to have an overall awareness of our local water and their impact on their enviornment through their water usage and protecting our water. Through learning about the well, the water pump, and having access to the Poudre River, students will gain a better understanding and be able to share with our student body and the community the importance of water in our world.

Not only would students be able to quickly locate their nearest water fountains, but the analysis would show areas where fountains are lacking. My partner and I will map out all of the water fountains in accessible areas of the campus, including most lecture halls and other common areas. We will indicate the number of fountains, whether it is a hydration station or simply a fountain, the floor level of the fountain, and the building name. Using the total number of fountains at a particular point, we will be able to identify the distribution of fountains throughout the campus and areas where fountains are lacking.
