We will plant an aromatic garden this summer. The location is a path that many schoolchildren use to walk to school each day. The hope is to have a beautiful surprise for everyone to see and enjoy when they return to school in September. We will add a hammock/swing between the two trees, eye catching trinkets, sparklies, painted rocks and more in the 'fairy garden' tradition.
When we were deciding how we wanted to help our local environment, one of the students (4 years old) said, "We use a lot of paper at school for drawing. I think we should plant a tree since paper comes from trees!" We decided that we would plant a tree on our playground as a way of saying "thank you" to the trees for providing paper and for allowing us to breathe clean air (which is especially important in big cities like NY!) I wanted the students to get experience with fundraising and working toward a goal. The students came up with a plan to have an Ice Cream Fundraiser and luckily for us, it was a beautiful, sunny day! We made over $300! This allowed us to purchase a Cherry Blossom Tree for our playground. Finally, I wanted the students to "get their hands dirty" and help plant the tree. On a rainy, New York day, the students worked hard to dig a hole for our new Cherry Blossom.
We planted Emperor Tulip bulbs, like others have done around the world. Because we live in zone 8, the protocol called for us to refrigerate our bulbs to ensure a proper wintering. We also chose to run an experiment with a second bed of bulb. These we planted November 1st. The other bed we planted January 10 (as the protocol asked for). We created journals to record observations as to when they emerged and when they bloomed. This data we reported to Journey North. It was interesting to find that the earlier planted bulbs (experiment bed) emerged first and bloomed first, but they did not look as healthy as the later planted bulbs. They were a bit twisted and stunted. The wintering of bulbs did make a difference!
Our project will help the environment, while helping people acknowledge the importance of recycling. We will collect all the recycled bottles and empty them out. We will have two bags, one for plastic bottles and the other one for aluminum cans. The money collected will be used for our garden. We will clean up the garden space, fertilize the soil, plant vegetables and fuits, and water them. We will fix up our irrigation system and, at least once a week, check up on the garden.
We will get various type of plants to plant outside in this garden. These plants should be able to resist the elements. We will also use various tools such as shovels to help us dig holes. We are planning on putting many rocks around the garden with positive messages on them. Lastly, we will put benches and other areas to sit in for students in the garden.
Children in our Title One School have little time outside and very few opportunities to interact with nature. We will collect a team of volunteers (teachers, administrators, students and families) to clean out the trash, weed and mow, purchase moveable parts to encourage creative play, purchase and post materials to enhance knowledge of nature, including; trees, plants, bugs, animals and birds. We will create rules and policy regarding upkeep, including; weeding, bird feeders, and rules respecting all living things. We will install trash and recycling containers, purchase a rain barrel to reuse water, we will secure a donors choose to purchase the materials to build a small fish pond and will include the person who does gardening in the city to help with the organic garden and its upkeep.
The Oakley Park Roots & Shoots leaders will research what plants are good for our zone, research a healthy habitat for our animal visitors and research the benefits of learning outdoors. We will then implement our findings by planting new plants, building a heathy habitat for our mother duck and other animals and last we will educate our school on the importance of outdoor class time.
Holiday Program at All Life Matters Sanctuary. A group of 16 to 18 children will be attending a holiday program at All Life Matters. The adult supervisor will assist the children in following the Roots and Shoots 4-step formula over a period of one week. Children will tour the facilities, be introduced to the various animals, be shown videos of Every Living Thing animal sanctuary in Dar es Salaam as well as Animal Ambulance rescue in Johannesburg. They will interview the various people working at the sanctuary, including the director, Moira. Once fully engaged they will map out the farm, observe areas that require improvement (this will also come from the various interviews on site). Children will decide on a short term remedy to complete during the holiday camp as well as long term ideas to continue supporting the animal haven following the service learning ethos of Roots and Shoots.
We will announce Beach, Jungle, & Cenote clean up days, gather with trash bags, and clean up trash with gloves. We would love donations of gloves and plastic bags! Then, we will have a party at the end to celebrate, sharing food that participants bring. Kids will be the focus but of course adults are welcome (& necessary for support).
