We are a small troop of Girl Scouts that have partnered with the original Green Up Day founders to help build awareness to youth. We have reached out to other troops (both Girl Scout and Boy Scout) to help increase participation by encouraging them to participate in Green Up Day, but by also spreading the word around town. We have also partnered with he town to collect the bags of trash that we collect so that they will be properly disposed of and recycled. To date we have over 15 community groups and volunteer organizations participating in Green Up Day!

Our Environmental Science 12 class runs our high school's biweekly recycling program. We collect paper/cardboard, as well as cans/bottles. We currently have large, tall, cardboard recycling bins in every classroom and office. They take up way too much space. Replacing those bins with these incredible, reusable, smaller, more versatile bins would make our collection time decrease AND we will spend less time out of the classroom running the program! These new bins will each be lined with a recyclable bag liner/garbage bag, so that the bags can be replaced as needed, thus saving the bins forever.

We will read stories of people who have made a difference and improved their environment, discuss their methods, apply the examples which we can use as models, and implement the changes to make our environment a better place.

For this project we will purchase a compost machine and have all of schools lunch remnants turned into nutrient rich compost for the garden. We will plant new flowers as well as fruits, berries, and vegetables. We will also be putting together a hydroponic garden. All of the food that is grown will be open to the public to be taken as needed. We will do all of this with the help of the Key Club community.

Third graders will make a plan with a clean up schedule. Our school has adopted our street, so we will clean there and on school grounds. We will recycle what we can from the collection and hope this makes our community nicer and safer for all people and animals.

After community mapping, it was uncovered how the space directly behind our school needs attention and care. Recently, the amount of trash and pet waste on the path has dramatically increased and is making it difficult and unpleasant for bike riders, hikers and runners to utilize. The students who participate in the K-Kids Program will write up a proposal to the local government advocating for clean-up and asking permission for placement of waste containers. In addition, the club will purchase and instal materials, create posters in both Spanish and English to educate the community around the needs of keeping the trail clean, and maintaining the Pet Waste Station.
