I will create a maker space in our Library. A space where students can use their imaginations to create, re-use, or problem solve. Students will have access to craft supplies such as scissors, glue, tape, reusable, and other objects to help them create new and exciting things or to problem solve real world problems.

My fifth grade students have identified increasing recycling on our campus as a project they would like to work on. We began the Kittridge “Green Team” project by writing a short survey to find out what the school staff recycles, and how we could improve recycling. The students interviewed the staff and compiled the results. They also counted the number of recycling bins in every room on campus, and made a list of places that needed bins. They did a mapping activity on our campus, tallying where trash was found on the ground, where bottles or cans were found on the ground or thrown away in regular trash cans, and which areas had the most foot traffic. The students then decided on the best areas to place recycling bins for bottles and cans. When we get these recycling bins, the students will design a presentation to take into our kindergarten to 4th grade classrooms to teach the younger students why recycling is important and how to use the bins correctly. In the spring, the 5th graders will hold a poster contest and a writing contest promoting Earth Day and the “3 R’s.” At the end of the year, we plan on having the 5th graders teach the 4th graders how to carry on the recycling program next year.

Goal is to increase writing across the content area by introducing digital literacy activities. Each activity will follow the same general procedure. 1. Students will be introduced to a concept. Activity will take approximately 2 days. (Example for math: integers) 2. Students will practice and analyze concept. Activity will take approximately 3 days. (Example: hands-on activity) 3. Students will research and write about the concept. Activity will take approximately 5 days. (Example: research and write about math based careers) 4. Students will produce a podcast, vlog, or blog as a culminating assessment of understanding. Activity will take approximately 2 weeks. (Example: Vlog on real world use of integers)

Digitally literate students can judge, create, and convey information in the digital world. Creating 21st century learners who are digitally literate is a priority. I plan to have students use technology to enhance their writing skills by creating blogs, vlogs, and podcasts throughout content classes. I will use this money to help create a recording studio in our middle school, so the money will go toward microphones, padcasters, and other recording equipment. The recording studio will be used in cross curricular projects (with science and social studies). The topics will include the importance of reducing waste and reusing/recycling materials, human community and human condition (through the topic of the Holocaust and various other historical conflicts), and the importance of various species of wildlife (in different geographical locations).

Our vision is to have a creative, welcoming writing lab equipped with alternative seating and lighting that offers a different feel than the traditional classroom. While our ideal circumstance would be to have every classroom equipped with alternative seating, we realize that you have to start somewhere. Since writing is a critical component of every other subject, we thought, "Why not start with our writing lab?" By providing our students with wobble cushions, yoga mats, exercise balls, video game chairs, and dry erase tables, we are hoping to create a fun environment where our kids can get excited about writing. Our plan is to allow allow students to use the writing lab as a place where they can focus solely on the writing process. All of our flexible seating options will help students use up their excess energy instead of having that energy manifest as a distraction in the classroom. This will allow students to focus on producing the best writing possible.

Our project will be that we set up a worm farm in our classroom. We will compost the remains of our snacks to increase the good fertile soil and then put that soil in our school garden. The soil will help promote growth of the vegetables that are being grown to help feed those in need in our community.
Uganda
The Nshara Parents School Conservation Club (NPSCC) encompasses a variety of initiatives aimed at instilling a commitment to environmental stewardship in Uganda’s next generation and encouraging more sustainable ways of living. We work with students and teachers within the school to improve knowledge about the environment, increase awareness of conservation issues, and encourage participation in fun, hands-on activities that ‘act locally’ to make a difference. We work with teachers and local experts to ensure our program focus is timely and relevant to current conservation concerns. We also continuously evaluate our efforts to assess their efficacy and inform future directions. SEATEAM Goals: 1. To get nets and the desire to remove plastics floating in our ocean into the hands of families who can make a difference. 2. To bridge the gap between environmental giants who are doing big research and hard work to save our waterways and every busy boat-family who appreciates and understands the importance of clear water. How will we do it? We are doing our best to lead by example. We use a variety of nets onboard our boat to remove plastic from the water when we see it - which can be several times a day. Our goal is to buy additional nets so we can give them to youth sailors, boat-families and fellow cruisers to use on the docks, increasing their ability to help our mission. TEAM MEMBERS NEEDED: Noone can solve this problem alone. This is not a marina-management issue, but a social responsibilty. It takes each one of us doing our small part to accomplish a big thing. We CAN reduce plastics in the water and our food source IF we work together.
