We will urge our local grocery stores and restaurants to reduce their reliance on single use plastic while offering information to the community about equally convenient alternatives. One of the activities we would like folks to participate in is a trash audit where we will tally the trash and find who is responsible for creating the waste found in our city. We will also educate people about starting their own kitchen compost while speaking at city hall meetings to propose adding compost bins to the community's trash collection. To learn more about our local waste facilities we will attend a tour of the current recycling facility and ask questions regarding composting. We plan to educate the public at our weekly farmers market in September about Food Literacy month (becoming aware of the effect our food has on our health, animals and the environment) and Hunger Month (awareness for the global hunger crisis) and come up with ways we can reduce our food waste and give back to those in need. Providing information such as 40% of food grown is wasted and that ironically we grow enough crops to feed 10-11 billion people which would solve world hunger, however, it is mostly fed to livestock, which leads to hazardous green house gas emissions. Offer some food for thought around food! Then we would like to wrap this all up by creating a community garden. Where the community can learn to grow their own food, and foster a stewardship of the land with provide many opportunities for connection, education and beautification.

The 16 students will work with our Technology teacher and students to measure for, design, cut, construct, and install the shelving that was not included in the greenhouse. Once the shelves are installed, the students will begin growing plants and performing inquiry activities throughout this time. Once matured, flowering plants will be transferred into our Pollinator Garden, while vegetables will be used to create healthy recipes tbaf we will prepare in the Home Economies kitchen.

We would like to work with our neighbor school to create a recycling program for plastic food containers at school, and also reduce waste by finding an alternative to the styrofoam trays being used to serve food.
United States
We will start by introducing 4th-6th grade students to sustainable options which can be used in lieu of plastic and styrofoam products. NOTE: Many of these students have gone through the Kids for Positive Change program and are familiar with skipping the straw, using reusable straws, bags and bottles. We also will work with a community restaurant owner who actively composts, and teach students about the benefits of composting. We'd like to set up a composting station at school and continue our school recycling program. We will have students research sustainable and compostable products, like utensils made from corn and cups made from wheat and provide them with materials to "build" their own compostable products. A main focus will be raising awareness about plastic bag pollution and promoting the use of reusable bags. Much like our Classroom-Community Action Assignment: "The Last Plastic Straw Ashtabula Campaign," we will have students launch a similar campaign about plastic bags. Students will present at Ashtabula City Council and Board of Education meeting about zero waste and how to move toward making Ashtabula Area City Schools a Zero Waste / Sustainable School System!

Our project will put the final touches on a year long endeavor by our students to raise community awareness of recycling by: reducing, reusing and recycling trash into an artistic sculpture.

We will focus on a green project to reduce waste and reuse materials from the classrooms repurposing them into displays and installations to beautify our school and community.

Our local Tar River access by our Town Common park is continuously full of trash. We will hold a Splash for Trash event on 10/13/2018 to clean the area within a two mile radius. We will be soliciting local boat/paddle owners to take youth out to clean the river and walkers for the surrounding areas.
