This project will increase awareness of the environment and natural resources available in our town and county. The Hyndman Greenhearts will utilize the school greenhouse to provide environmental education to elementary school children, grow plants to be used in community beautification and speak to various groups around town about environmental preservation in our community.

The project will give seniors and youth the opportunity to work together to plant flowers and harvest fruits/vegetables/herbs in their communities. We will partner with an existing community garden that will donate raised beds for us to garden during the Spring and Summer. We have Girl Scouts ( ages 4 - 14) and seniors (ages 65 & up) from the community-at-large that will work together to tend the garden (physical activity) and once crops are ready to harvest, the yield will be distributed amongst project participants and the community-at-large. We will also have a chef/nutritionist who will have cooking demos to show us how to prepare healthy meals from what we grew.

Students and teachers turn and monitor compost, checking pH, temp, and other soil variables. The DOOR Program will be working closely with the ecology club to monitor the process and create some wonderful compost!

Working with students and parents we have the following goals: 1. Revamp monarch garden. It needs general maintenance as well as repairs after recent construction. 2. Expand our three edible garden beds. 3. Establish, rehabilitate, and maintain our native Texas landscape. 4. Add informational and plant id signs to bed areas.

The first step is to clear out the overgrown areas, and get the bamboo under control. We will slowly but surely renovate each of the three small gardens to their full potential.

The St. James AME Church Community Service T-Shirt Project will give the members a since of pride and unity as we go out to the nursing homes and when we feed the less fortunate in the community. The T-shirts will help us be identified as those willing to help and serve.

First, we will plant a tree outside of our classroom. Next, we plan to incorporate an aquaponic growing system within our classroom to grow vegetables, which will incorporate our class fish tank and show how building a connection between plants and animals can be an amazing thing, just as in the wild.

We have a smaller student population at our alternative school in a modified building. A Youth-Build project of creating a patio is in the works. We would like to build some plant growing stations in and around our patio for beautification of the area as well as fresh herbs and other vegetables for our own consumption. The coordinator for the food shelf is coming in two week to consult with us, after which we plan on helping them establish some food growing plots before we start our own.
