First, we will plant a tree outside of our classroom. Next, we plan to incorporate an aquaponic growing system within our classroom to grow vegetables, which will incorporate our class fish tank and show how building a connection between plants and animals can be an amazing thing, just as in the wild.

We have a smaller student population at our alternative school in a modified building. A Youth-Build project of creating a patio is in the works. We would like to build some plant growing stations in and around our patio for beautification of the area as well as fresh herbs and other vegetables for our own consumption. The coordinator for the food shelf is coming in two week to consult with us, after which we plan on helping them establish some food growing plots before we start our own.

The soil is not the best for growing plants, so it is important to choose the types of plants to grow or plant. The school grounds are rather large, so a lot of help from students, staff and parents is critical in completing the project and continuing to update it. A lot of work has already been done in the past few years, but some areas were looking bad, so we have had to plan and tear down a large section.

We wish for our garden area to be cleaned up and well maintained. Also, we want our kids to understand where their food comes from and how to make healthy food choices!

Our project will harvest and save dropping fruit from community trees. Instead we will harvest all fruit and donate it to local shelters in our community. We will also be watering, pruning and mulching each tree, with hopes to give it a bust for the following season.

Our project will create a garden space that provides a variety of seasonal vegetables. The garden space will be attached to cooking classes that will introduce community members to new healthy recipes. To increase the butterfly population in our community, we will plant a small butterfly garden!

We plan to talk with the school cafeteria workers and try to convince them of providing us with fresh and healthy food. We plan to buy things such as gloves, hair-caps, napkins, dustbins and others so as to improve the sanitation of the surrounding. We plan to do this with the joint effort and agreement of the students, faculty, administration as well as the cafeteria.

This project is designed to have nondisabled culinary students work as peers/mentors with students with autism. This project will allow students with autism to be more included in school life. The students with autism will be contributing directly to the culinary arts program and the culinary arts students will peer/mentor the herb growers as they work together to prepare simple meals. If all goes well, this idea will be expanded to include other ideas that the students may create to work together. In the long term, the students will run this project according to their own visions.
