We are worried about food waste, and so we are going to pilot a compost program in one of the classrooms in our elementary school. Students will have an outdoor compost bin, but they will also have a smaller bin class to collect things like apple cores, banana peels, etc. Students will learn about the science and beneficial factors behind composting and will observe results such as decrease in classroom trash. Students will then work to educate the student body and then hopefully implement a school-wide composting policy.

We will educate through the arts- recycled projects, rap music video, drawings and digital collages. We will collect street debris samples and coastal beach clean-up data and analyze our findings, to infer, and draw conclusions. Students responded by creating a rap video to help bring awareness to the problem. Here is a link to the video: https://vimeo.com/172581448

My goal with my project is to help encourage students to recycle their clothing by donating to local thrift stores in the area and to show them the benefits of buying reused and recycled clothing. I want this event to be more than a clothing sale; I want it to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling and reusing clothing. Besides it being an economic solution, it is also one step towards helping the environmental and waterways. The more people that are encouraged to recycle and reuse will have a larger impact on the environment in turn. The plan for my project starts by gathering clothing donations from the community and my high school. I am currently asking local thrift stores for donations and have already received donations from the students at my high school. While getting donations, I’ll be applying to grants and contests to help fund my idea and make it a reality. For my project to become a reality, I will need materials to showcase the clothes when the day of the thrift store event comes. These materials include hangers and clothing racks, all of which can be purchased second hand. Once all the materials are gathered, the Met High School Thrift Store will be opened to the students and public to get second hand clothing in good condition and for affordable prices. At the event there will also be informational flyers, telling the public about the positive affects buying second hand clothing and donating has on the environment.

The group will organize tables with games during all school lunch, ask teachers to distribute videos, and will host an All School Meeting with a focus on Earth Day. The group will also read "An Earth Day Story" and decorate an mural with pledges from the student body on how they can make a difference.

The group is working on the planters and other gardening efforts and planning several seminars and mini projects to highlight the importance of being environmentally conscious.

My project will take place over the course of a semester and allow students to get points by using reusables in their homeroom classes. At the end of the year, the class with the most points will get a pizza party to celebrate their good efforts.

Our project will teach others about the importance of having a healthy watershed. Students will create watershed models to educate students and parents at our school's open house event. The focus will be on how humans interact with the environment and how we can make a positive impact on having a healthy watershed.

We see a lot of debris at our local park and beach in the areas closest to wildlife ie along the coast of Jamaica Bay or on the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean. As we look at the streets in our neighborhood we see litter that has the potential to blow to our ocean. We watch as trash blows from uncovered cans on streets, in our school yard, on the board walk, and on the beach to the direction of the ocean. We would like to focus our project on how coastline communities like ours have a greater impact the debris especially plastic in the ocean. We would like to look into putting closed trash cans with lids in our school yards, local parks near Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and the beach and boardwalk in our community. We will create art in many different forms ie. garbage quits, recycled sculptures, drawings, poetry, rap music videos) to make students, teachers, parents, and families aware of how we can positively and negatively impact the ocean and bay ecosystems. We will conduct surveys to see how students, staff, and citizens in our school community feel about the situation with trash in our school yard or on the ground in the neighborhood. Do they think it is a problem? If so for who? Why? What is causing it? What effects does trash have when not disposed of correctly? Then we will educate the school community by visiting classes, holding assemblies, Hosting Beach Clean-Ups, speaking at the PTA meetings, Writing Blurbs for grade newsletters, and sharing our art. We will then conduct a post-program survey to see if awareness and views changed. We will work with a local community organization that I have worked closely with for the last 4 years. This past spring they just opened their RISE center (Rockaway Institute for a Sustainable Earth). They have other elementary schools that they work with in Rockaway that we can visit and educate too. We will conduct pre and post surveys with the schools we campaign at to see if our presentations have a positive impact on students understanding and daily practices. We will hope to be successful in our closed and lidded garbage pail idea or find another way to ensure trash that is disposed of properly stays in the trash cans.

We will reach out to local schools like SDSU and UCSD to bring in a wide audience of people. The screening only works out if we sell the minimum number of tickets, so we will do a lot of marketing for this project! We are also planning on having a beach clean up soon after the screening, so hopefully this will generate interest.
