Peace, Love & Hope promotes anti-bullying through art workshops, public presentations, personal story exchange, outreach and exhibitions. Children are invited to participate in batik workshops, where they are taught the techniques and have the opportunity to create individual pieces on the theme of peace, love and hope. The pieces are then assembled into large-scale quilts which Avy tours and exhibits at museums, cultural centres, schools and international children’s festivals, raising awareness and visibility for the anti-bullying cause. With the Roots & Shoots $200 mini grant, I will put together menstrual hygiene product "kits" for the food pantry/assistance program. These "kits" will contain items such as pads, tampons, underwear, bar soap, and toothpaste. I will also be sewing reusable cloth pads, since they can alleviate the costs of disposable menstrual hygiene products. After talking with the food pantry director, we decided to start out with 20 pads as a trial period. I will also be creating informational pamphlets about menstruation and the menstrual movement for community members.

We will meet with restaurant management, owners, and distributers to achieve these goals over time. We will also reach out to volunteer organizations in an effort to increase our manpower and thus timeframe of the overall project.

We will visit individual restaurants and ask them to donate anything they can to the foodbank that we help at regularly. We hope to receive a lot of support in this endeavor as we plan, in the long term, to try and find a way to help these families stave off hunger.

We will raise funds to organize a community wide event aimed at a young population. The funds will help bring over a popular all-girl band from Osaka, Japan called Shonen Knife. Food vendors, artists, and other entertainers will be invited to join the event to ultimately raise money for scholarships for students who are traveling to Japan this summer with our sister city program.
