This project will include: Donations of money, toys, and other helpful supplies for the local animal shelter! We will do this by hosting a fundraiser during this project. The hope is that this project will not only help the animals, but be a great learning experience.

On certain Fridays and Saturdays during the school year, students meet at Hillside school and are assigned a certain part of Hillside's meadows and trails to work on. For example, adding wood chips to our trails, cutting weeds, organizing the tool shed, discarding pollution from the pond, and maintaining the butterfly garden.

I plan to have the group meet twice a month. At each meeting, we will cover some key vocabulary words as well as the concepts behind them. Each meeting will feature a hands-on project to illustrate the selected topic, such as a nature-related experiment, making bird feeders, water-scopes and outdoor explorations. Occasionally we may arrange extra meetings at nature centers and parks. Each meeting will end with a short song, poem or picture book relating to the topic covered. The topics covered will alternate between focussing on a trait found in many animals and how they compare, and focussing in depth on the natural history of a particular local species. This means that there will be one general topic and one species spotlight per month. Contact me for meeting locations and dates.

Our project will establish an area with appropriate predator proof enclosures for different species, available for the community, especially farmers, to come and see how they can keep their livestock safe. We will research the best techniques for predator proofing, costs to build and maintain the structures, organizations to partner with, and funding sources. Then we will build the structures, and open up the area so people can visit and learn!

Indonesia
This project is to set up a playgroup where the focus of the play based learning is on animals and sustainability. The playgroup will educate young children, whilst also raising funds to make the NGO mei - Multispecies Education International, financially sustainable. The NGO (or Yayasan, as it is called in Indonesia) mei is committed to supporting the community to live with a biodiversity of animal species, but we recognise that the environment, people and animals are all interconnected so our education and community development program is based on an Eco-Health model. This means we support communities to have a healthy environment, and we care about the health and welfare of people, as well as animals. Our education and community development program is organised around 12 topics – Healthy Environment (Air, Water, Waste, Plant Biodiversity, Food, Energy), Healthy People (Culture, Language, Health & Well Being) and Healthy Animals (Animal Health, Animal Biodiversity, Living with Animals). We are currently building a new sustainable Multispecies Education Center in Bali, very close to the main entrance to Green School www.greenschool.org and we will be locating the playgroup there. We are due to open on 18th August and will offer 5 free scholarship places to local Indonesian children.
