Water use and water conservation issues are increasingly serious in the US west. We know that we must approach this problem in a number of ways. One way that we, as 4th graders can address this problem is to plant a garden full of water wise (native) plants at our school to serve as a demonstration site for all future students, their families and all members of our communities. Furthermore, we are addressing the problem of the alarming rate in which our native pollinators are decreasing, like the many species of bees native to western Montana. By planting these natives, we are providing a place for them to forage and thrive. In addition, we plan on using the money to create interpretive signs which inform all visitors of the benefits of incorporating native plants into landscaping projects.

We will educate through the arts- recycled projects, rap music video, drawings and digital collages. We will collect street debris samples and coastal beach clean-up data and analyze our findings, to infer, and draw conclusions. Students responded by creating a rap video to help bring awareness to the problem. Here is a link to the video: https://vimeo.com/172581448

Our project will help preserve nature and contribute to the continuation of clean drinking water for NYC. We raise the trout in our classroom and we dig in the dirt to plant the trees.

My idea is that there is this tiny weight at the end of the string that the store puts on so if it gets untangled the balloon won't fly away because it has a weight. The weights could be shaped like the animals that live in Washington, D.C.; for example, a fish, a turtle, an eagle and a deer. So there can be thousands of animals and for every store they can have their special animal, like DC United can have Talon.

We advertised in the school and spread the word! It's an annual event and many families come.

This project will , raise money to donate to research groups to further their studies to attempt to stop this from growing. And to get the word out to the community about the harmfulness to themselves and the animals of the lake, with the water conditions and quality of it.

We will be raising trout in classrooms all over NYC in order to release them into the watershed streams. We will also work to restore and protect the riparian area around the streams.

We see a lot of debris at our local park and beach in the areas closest to wildlife ie along the coast of Jamaica Bay or on the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean. As we look at the streets in our neighborhood we see litter that has the potential to blow to our ocean. We watch as trash blows from uncovered cans on streets, in our school yard, on the board walk, and on the beach to the direction of the ocean. We would like to focus our project on how coastline communities like ours have a greater impact the debris especially plastic in the ocean. We would like to look into putting closed trash cans with lids in our school yards, local parks near Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and the beach and boardwalk in our community. We will create art in many different forms ie. garbage quits, recycled sculptures, drawings, poetry, rap music videos) to make students, teachers, parents, and families aware of how we can positively and negatively impact the ocean and bay ecosystems. We will conduct surveys to see how students, staff, and citizens in our school community feel about the situation with trash in our school yard or on the ground in the neighborhood. Do they think it is a problem? If so for who? Why? What is causing it? What effects does trash have when not disposed of correctly? Then we will educate the school community by visiting classes, holding assemblies, Hosting Beach Clean-Ups, speaking at the PTA meetings, Writing Blurbs for grade newsletters, and sharing our art. We will then conduct a post-program survey to see if awareness and views changed. We will work with a local community organization that I have worked closely with for the last 4 years. This past spring they just opened their RISE center (Rockaway Institute for a Sustainable Earth). They have other elementary schools that they work with in Rockaway that we can visit and educate too. We will conduct pre and post surveys with the schools we campaign at to see if our presentations have a positive impact on students understanding and daily practices. We will hope to be successful in our closed and lidded garbage pail idea or find another way to ensure trash that is disposed of properly stays in the trash cans.

We will reach out to local schools like SDSU and UCSD to bring in a wide audience of people. The screening only works out if we sell the minimum number of tickets, so we will do a lot of marketing for this project! We are also planning on having a beach clean up soon after the screening, so hopefully this will generate interest.

Our project will fund our amphibious robot. We will purchase tools and equipment to build our robot and will use the robot to collect water and soil samples.
