From November 13-15, 2009, Roots & Shoots California held its annual 3-day California Youth Leadership Summit at Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades, CA. 60 participants from Roots & Shoots groups all over the state enjoyed workshops, community service projects, guest speakers and the fresh outdoors, to name a few.

Participants had an active weekend of fun, service, and learning. The California Youth Leadership Council (CAYLC) and Roots & Shoots California staff put on several workshops, including “How to Work with Young Children” by Emily R. and Laurel W., “Fundraising” by Hanna G. and Miranda M, and “Project Planning” by R&S CA staff member Lisa Hetherington. The adults did not miss out either—chaperones enjoyed workshops such as “Project Share” and a Group Leader Round Table.

The Roots & Shoots mission--human community, animals, and the environment--were covered in full. Everyone worked together to create “Bags of Love”  filled with practical necessities and Thanksgiving Food boxes to be handed out to homeless people. They created a hand-painted mural and painted animal door hangers for the South Los Angeles animal shelter. Long-time Roots & Shoots California supporter John Zavalney presented on climate change.

Roots & Shoots California staff, CAYLC, and attendees welcomed special guests  LA Animal Services Commissioner Melanie Ramsayer and LA Animal Services Volunteer liason Deshawn Diaz. No one wanted to miss this event—even Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa came out, along with KTLA’s Lu Parker who wrapped up the Saturday afternoon session with a heartwarming presentation on animal rights and services.

There was all this—and so much more! Team building activities led by CAYLC member Lisa N., a scavenger hunt, fire pit skits, and a hike in the nearby mountains accented an already action-packed weekend. In other words, this year’s California Youth Leadership Summit was the place to be!
