Citydifferent Roots & Shoots

We wanted to do a pet food drive for the local animal shelter. We had a representative from the animal shelter come and talk to us in May to kick off the event. We assigned different stores to different families. The families were responsible for contacting the stores about donations. Originally we wanted to have donation boxes placed in the stores but the stores didn't want to do that. We also asked friends and family to donate. Prior to collecting the items we checked with the animal shelter to see what items they needed. They gave us a specific list of items. We took two months to collect everything and then contacted Tom the representative that kicked off our event to schedule a tour. We brought two large boxes of toys and dishes as well as 12lbs of dog food and four cans of cat food to the shelter and then had a tour on the 23rd of July. The kids enjoyed being able to see the animals that they were helping and learned how to care for pets. They also learned about volunteer opportunities at the shelter. Most our kids are under ten years old so contacting the stores and miscellaneous duties were done by the adults.
