New Mexico Change for Chicks
One of the main goals was for young children to understand world hunger. I also wanted my students to understand that even though they are small they can make a big difference in the world through service-learning projects. Last year my students raised money to buy the gift of a goat. It made them feel good to know that they helped someone else in need, and that the gift was one that kept on giving. I thought it would be fun to focus on chicks this year. Our project was a success in that the class raised enough money to help three families. These families will each receive the gift of a flock of chicks. Our project will end with the incubation of chicken eggs. We will learn more about the life cycle of chickens, and hopefully witness the hatching of baby chicks. I will also bring one of my chickens to school for a one day visit.
