National Campaigns
Reusable Bag Campaign
Over one million plastic bags are consumed worldwide every minute, or an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion bags per year. To help reduce our impact, Roots & Shoots groups have joined together to promote the use of reusable bags for shopping. If you bring your own bags to the store for a year, you alone can prevent the waste of 400 bags or more. The power is literally in your hands. Learn more by clicking the photograph above.
Roots & Shoots Day of Peace
Every year, in late September, Roots & Shoots groups around the globe join in celebrating the Roots & Shoots Day of Peace by flying Giant Peace Dove Puppets and implementing peace projects in their communities. Learn more by clicking the photograph above.
This year's Roots & Shoots Day of Peace was a special one for the Great Lakes Region. For the first time, a number of our groups participated in Chicago’s Day of Peace Celebration, the oldest in the country! This event was certainly not the only celebration of peace in our region.
The Minnesota Planet Protectors and Virgil’s Roots & Shoots group in Minneapolis also flew a Giant Peace Dove. Our Great Lakes Youth Leadership Council and staff also had the opportunity to attend a Peace Day conference where the council members showed off their Dove-flying skills for everyone to see.
The mission and words of Dr. Jane were realized on this great day, and we thank all of our groups that could participate for letting your doves fly. It was truly a wonderful day and we can't wait for next year's celebration on September 20th, 2009!
Previous Campaigns
Rebirth the Earth: Trees for Tomorrow

The ReBirth the Earth: Trees for Tomorrow campaign aimed to raise $10,000 (USD) to build five Roots & Shoots tree nurseries in Tanzania while planting 3,000 trees in the United States.
The campaign was entirely youth-initiated, youth-led and youth-driven! Roots & Shoots groups across the country went above and beyond the call of duty and surpassed the campaign's goals raising $16,415 (USD)! Well done to all those who made this campaign a success! Tchimpounga Youth Campaign
This campaign is a a prime example of how the combined efforts of people across the globe can make a world of difference. Roots & Shoots members from Sweden to L.A. raised over $54,000 to help fund a new chimpanzee care facility for the many orphaned chimpanzees at the Tchimpounga Sanctuary in the Republic of Congo. More than funds, this effort has also raised awareness about the cruel commercial bushmeat trade in Africa that leaves many chimps orphaned. From collecting “chimp change” to trick-or-treating for chimps to playing a more meaningful game of “A Barrel of Monkeys,” Roots & Shoots members have proven their dedication and creativity. A huge thank you goes out to those who participated and the National Youth Leadership Council who spearheaded the program. Congratulations! Learn more by clicking the photograph above.
