Congratulations to Northeastern University Roots & Shoots—our first 2009 Roots & Shoots New England mini-grant awardees for their inspiring project! Roots & Shoots groups from the Mission Hill School and Northeastern University, as well as youth from across the region, teamed up for a day of service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his commitment to making the world a better place. Over 30 enthusiastic volunteers came out to work on projects for the Mission Hill School, including: - organizing the library and cleaning classrooms
- planting seeds of herbs and spices for each classroom
- making posters about recycling, water conservation and environmental issues to decorate the halls of the school
- designing interactive environmental games like Habitat Trivia
All the volunteers saw the difference they made at Mission Hill School. Not only were the classrooms clean and tidy, it was a great opportunity for volunteers to educate youth about environmental issues that are important in their communities. To hear directly from some of these dedicated R&S volunteers, check out the Sprouts of Hope blog! Find out more about this successful day of service by watching Meghan McCormick, the Roots & Shoots group leader at Northeastern University, explain some of the day’s activities on YouTube. Thanks again to all the volunteers from Northeastern University, Arlington Enrichment Collaborative, Harvard University, Medford High School, the New England Youth Leadership Council and the Sprouts of Hope who came out for this great day!
