Will Dr. Jane be involved?
Dr. Jane is incredibly excited about this online course. It is driven by her model, mission and vision for the Roots & Shoots program. We are very excited to announce that Dr. Jane will be joining the course as a guest instructor. Check in each week for Lessons with Dr. Jane.
I am not a teacher, can I still participate?
Absolutely. This course will be beneficial for any formal or informal educators, adult mentors wishing to facilitate service projects with youth and strong youth leaders wanting to gather a group of their peers to get involved.
I am brand new to Roots & Shoots, can I still participate?
Yes! This course will give you the Roots & Shoots background and history you need to be successful doing the program.
I am not in the United States, can I still participate?
This course is designed for K-12 formal and informal educators in the United States, but we welcome all professions from all over the world to participate because truly the materials and model can be used by any audience. If you are located outside the US we encourage you to check in with the Jane Goodall Institute office closest to you, as they might offer resources and materials specific to your country or region. You can find a list of offices on www.janegoodall.org/offices. If you are in the United Kingdom, we request that you not register for this course, but instead reach out to the UK office.
What grades and subjects does the Roots & Shoots model work with?
Roots & Shoots has been used in every single grade and subject matter (even physical education!). We have adaptations of our resources for younger children and the types of R&S campaigns that you develop will vary based on the age and abilities of your young people.
What happens after the course?
The course will guide you towards identifying your own project that meets the needs of your specific community! Make sure to join the Roots & Shoots network by signing up for a free membership on RootsandShoots.org! We are here to help you along the way!
How much does the course cost?
There is no cost for the course or any course resources or activities. For a small fee, you can get a Course Certificate. You do not need the certificate to be a trained Roots & Shoots group leader.
Can I get a Course Certificate afterward?
For an additional fee ($49), you can get a Course Certificate. Financial aid is available.
Will the Course Certificate count towards my Professional Development Units or Continuing Education Credits?
For K-12 teachers in the United States, it is up to individual state licensing agencies as to whether they will accept the certificate as evidence of acceptable teacher training.
Can I earn graduate credit?
The course can be taken for credit through the University of CU-Boulder starting in Summer 2018. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
When will I have access to the lectures and assignments?
Once you enroll for a Certificate, you’ll have access to all videos, quizzes, and programming assignments (if applicable). Peer review assignments can only be submitted and reviewed once your session has begun. If you choose to explore the course without purchasing, you may not be able to access certain assignments.
What if I need additional time to complete the course?
Not a problem - course schedules are flexible, and course fee payments provide 180 days of full course access and Certificate eligibility. Self-paced courses have suggested deadlines, but you won’t be penalized for missing deadlines as long as you earn your Certificate within 180 days. Session-based courses may require you to meet deadlines to stay on track; but if you fall behind, you can switch to a later session, and any work you’ve completed will transfer with you.
What will I get if I pay for this course?
If you pay for this course, you will have access to all of the features and content you need to earn a Course Certificate. If you complete the course successfully, your electronic Certificate will be added to your Accomplishments page - from there, you can print your Certificate or add it to your LinkedIn profile. Note that the Course Certificate does not represent official academic credit from the partner institution offering the course.
Can I take this course for free?
You can access all videos, readings, and discussions, free of charge. You can also submit assignments and earn a grade for free. If you want to earn a Course Certificate, you can purchase the course or apply for Financial Aid.
What is the refund policy?
You will be eligible for a full refund until two weeks after your payment date, or (for courses that have just launched) until two weeks after the first session of the course begins, whichever is later. You cannot receive a refund once you’ve earned a Course Certificate, even if you complete the course within the two-week refund period. View our full refund policy.
