The Problem

The main purpose of the project is to inform people not only of new ways to obtain and save energy but how they can help the environment. For example, people will be able to power their cell-phone devices while riding a bike, directly saving energy. In addition, the more people who use bikes, the less people there will be who use transportation like cars, trains, and buses, which contribute greatly to Earth’s air pollution. Cars have created about a quarter of the hydrocarbons in our air along with more than half of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides Our project is a method of preventing further production of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides into our atmosphere.

Our Plan

One of the students from the Engineering Club will ride a bicycle to generate enough electricity to power a cell phone. The motor attached to the bicycle serves as a generator where human movement produces electricity. The details of our project are currently being investigated, but the estimated cost of this project will be close to $200. We are going to assess the energy output of riding a bicycle for one hour. Then, we will use the data to convince gyms that they could become eco-friendly by using regular bikes for spinning classes and connecting those bikes to motors. One of our classmates will produce a video for us to share on social media.
