The Problem

Roots & Shoots at CNU aims to lessen the runoff pollution into Lake Maury, by rehabilitating the riparian buffer at Causey's Mill. Causey's Mill is Newport News landmark located on the edge of Lake Maury and is close to a hospital and a major road that both lead to runoff pollution at the site. Our goal is to help reduce this runoff from the surrounding area, while also educating the public who frequent the park, and the Newport News Community on the benefits of a riparian buffer.

Our Plan

Roots & Shoots at CNU will work with the Newport News Master Gardner's to plan and plant a new riparian buffer at Causey's Mill on the edge of Lake Maury. School-groups and community members will be invited to help with the project to raise awareness of runoff problems. Signs will be posted on the property so all visitors will be able to learn about the riparian buffer, and how riparian buffers can be created on their own properties.
