The Problem

My wish for this project is to raise awareness in my community, and also my school (where I am a 2nd grade teacher), about monarch butterflies and their habitats. It is my hope that my students, friends, and family will develop an appreciation for these special creatures and be inspired to plant their own monarch habitats. My big wish is to inspire school administrators at my school to grant us permission to plant a pollinator garden at our elementary school.

Our Plan

During the summer months, I will collect monarch eggs in my pollinator and milkweed gardens at home. I will raise and release the monarchs back into my garden and continue to collect eggs from the next generation. I will take caterpillars to my school and teach my students about their life cycle, migratory patterns, habitat destruction, deforestation, and ways they can help the monarchs. We will release the butterflies at school! I have been doing similar activities in my classroom for the past few years and would like to take this project a step further by becoming Roots and Shoots official!
