Pawsitively A Reason to READ

The Problem

Our 3rd grade students will discover and authentic reason to read by reading to animals in our local Animal Shelter. Studies show that reading to animals provides a nonthreatening audience where children can become more fluent and proficient readers. The consistent interaction the animals have with the children help the dogs to become more socialized which in turn increases their chances of being adopted. Children develop a more compassionate attitude toward animals. It is a WIN- WIN situation for our 3rd grade readers and the misplaced pets in our shelter.

Our Plan

Students will read to dogs in our local animals shelter twice a month. In addition to visiting the shelters they will provide the dogs with homemade dog toys made from recycled materials as well as dog cookies baked in our own classroom.
