The Problem

Justin wanted to raise awareness awareness about pollution in efforts to spread the message about frogs telling us the planet needs help. Justin enjoyed recycling bottles but when he found out the trash can be turned into treasures- it was like Magic! He met a girl in Indiana that works with a company that turns plastic caps into benches. She asked if Justin wanted to create a recycled bench out of plastic caps to further spread his love for turning trash into treasures and Justin was up for the challenge to collect 200 pounds of used plastic caps.

Our Plan

Justin collected 210 pounds of caps and had them recycled into a bench. He went door to door asking for caps, put bins up at his school, worked with the student council at his school, went to Staples Center, Walgreens and local businesses and asked for their old plastic caps. It took 7 months to collect all of the caps.

Here is how the project went:

It took 7 months for Justin to collect 200 pounds of plastic caps to recycle into a buddy benchJustin collected caps from his family, friends, classmates, neighbors, YMCA, Staples Center, Walgreens and people even mailed them in from other states. The project took place from September 2019 to April 2019.

Through this project I/we learned:

We learned about the different types of plastics. We learned about staying determined and not giving up. We learned how to work together with the community.

What I/we might change:

If we did this project again. We would find another recycling center to melt the plastic into a bench. It was a lot of work getting all the 200 pounds of caps from Los Angeles to Indiana and then the bench back.

My/our favorite part of this project was:

The best part of the project was working with the community and reaching the 200 pounds goal. And getting plastic caps from the Staples Center at the Elton John concert. It is also great to see the bench at Justin's school in Los Angeles

Some tips, tricks or fun facts about the project:

The tricks are to stay positive and don't be afraid to ask businesses for help.
